I don't think I've read anything by Heinlein since "Time Enough For Love" (the story of Lazarus Long, who also appears in the latter part of this book), which I think I read when I was still at school and much less critical than I am nowadays.

Richard Ames, aka Colin Campbell is the most irritating protagonist I've come across since I read "Headlong" by Michael Frayn! He is arrogant and condescending, speaks in an arch and mannered way, and practically every woman he meets wants to marry him, even though he keeps going on about wanting to spank their pink bottoms. Grrr!

But thank you for sending it to me anyway!

I am sorry; this book was put in a pile and missed when it came to journalling.

Journal Entry 7 by wingCross-patchwing from Leicester, Leicestershire United Kingdom on Sunday, August 30, 2009
Typical Heinlein, harking back to his Moon is a Harsh Mistress days combined with some of the attitudes in Starship Troopers. The cat is a odd touch - but not really relevant to the story. The first half of the book the story speeds along, with action and mystery. His working with alternate time lines in the next section is confusing but the end is very suitable.

Got home from a weekend away to find it waiting for me. I will read it as quick as I can. Many thanks.

Journal Entry 11 by bookowl1000 from Wuhan, Hubei China on Thursday, September 17, 2009
I loved Starship Troopers and did not like Stranger in a Strange Land - for me this was in between. Heinlein has again managed to create a character that I find very irritating, and his writing bugs me when he tries to get to philosophical.

Why any woman would be so attracted to Ames is a mystery to me, yet woman are repeatidly throwing themselves at him???? - no accounting for taste I guess.

I am going to have to get around to reading my copy of The Moon is a Harsh Misteress to get more of the Moons back story.

The real mystery is why I want to keep reading Heinlein when his work so often irritaes me???????

Journal Entry 22 by wingAnonymousFinderwing at Camogli, Liguria Italy on Wednesday, September 15, 2010
Actually one of the weirdest books I ever read: smart, crazy, witty, unpredictable and funny (Tree-san and the wig are unforgettable), starting from the title, which seems to have been chosen during a trip and has hardly anything to do with the whole story almost till the end. I confess sometimes I got lost in Heinlein's universes and times, but it was a story worth reading which I would recommend especially to those, like me, who are not sci-fi addicted: this book is a wonderful display of creative power, pure fantasy at work showing what the genre is capable of offering beyond flying saucers and little green men. My only regret is the end, sad and quite hopeless.
The book is about to leave to Argentina to Elidanora. Hyper7 has asked to be skipped.
Thanks for sharing, enjoy the reading.
Blert!
