From the back:

By turns poignant, disarming and bittersweet, Me & Emma is the unforgettable story of an endearingly precocious child and her determination to put the pieces of her fractured life back together.

I have to say I enjoyed this book, and the ending took me by surprise a bit. This book is now ready for a new home

This looks promising -- and I like the fact that it's set in North Carolina.

I've been so curious about this book ever since I got it that I finally sat down after making my lesson plans and read the entire thing at one clip this afternoon!

My favorite part involved the music group at Zeb lon's (you'd have to read the book to get the joke about the gap) including the oldest man around (Sonny), Walles (what a name), and whittling Drum Wilson with his priceless mother-of-pearl mandolin. I also liked the fact that Carrie read classic children's books such as Charlotte's Web and Little House on the Prairie. Gammy and Aunt Lillibit were terrific characters, too. From up around Asheville, their opinion was:

"I'll tell you where it went wrong. You've never settled into life. You want life to be better to you but it ain't like that. Not for folks like us. Life's hard. That's the way it is. But you can't seem to settle into it and work with it like it is. You want it to be better for you? That ain't gonna happen. Y'hear me? It ain't never gonna happen..." (p. 249).
