To be read.
I call myself a mystery fan but sadly,i don't enjoy most of the mystery novels I read.Patricia Cornwell makes me wonder why is she so popular- I find her books to be boring, pedestrian, write with-your-eyes-closed crap.
Janet Evanovich is a lot funnier in her own mind,I'm sure. Then there is the quirkier stuff like The Eyre Affair that seemed like a good idea at the time....Recently, I have enjoyed some Carl Hiassen and even Sue Grafton but they are not the kind of books I excitedly reccommend to my friends So,I didn't have very high expectations of Elizabeth George, as my friend and erstwhile partner in crime, delala, handed me the tome and muttered ,"She is supposed to be quite good."Well,my friends and fellow unbelievers ,she IS actually quite good. This American author manages to pull off a quinessential English mystery without any false notes that I could detect. There was good characterisation, a strong sense of place and a well-plotted mystery that made you want to race through the book to see 'whodunnit'. Though not quite up to the calibre of P.D.James I would still reccomend this book and am now on the look out for her other books.
BTW The country manor where most of the action is set has my family name. The book also mentions the street that I used to live on twenty years ago and my old boyfriend's place of work. How mysterious, what ?!
