Classic story (set in the Australian outback) of a young woman following her dreams rather than do as she was told.

I love the book, I love the movie.

From Amazon: In this ironically titled and riotous first novel by Miles Franklin, originally published in 1901, Sybylla tells the story of growing up passionate and rebellious in rural NSW, where the most that girls could hope for was to marry or to teach. Sybylla will do neither, but that doesn't stop her from falling in love, and it doesn't make the choices any easier.

Some Trivia:

Banned by the author from republication for 10 yrs after her death in 1954, the book was originally published in Edinburgh in 1901.

The objections were not based on doubt about the merit of the book, but on the distress she felt when a work of fiction was taken to be direct autobiography. Much of it, is clearly based on fact; but obviously the facts have been changed, enlarged, dramatized, and lit with imagination to make a work of art.

The Miles Franklin award was set up under the terms of the will of the late Stella Maria Sarah Miles Franklin, the famed Australian author who died in September 1954. It is given annually for the novel or play of the highest literary merit, presenting aspects of Australian life, and published during the preceding year. The award is administered by the Permanent Trustee Co Ltd of Sydney, and is currently worth $42,000.

I'm glad that I've finally read this Australian classic.

I found it very hard going. Sybylla is self centred as any 16 year old. I felt for her being born at a time where her mind was not able to be recognised and put to a better use simply because she was a girl.

I loved the portraits she drew of the bush. I reconised it from my own times in it and really in 100 years it hasn't changed a lot. The heat, the flies, the kookaburras and wattle are still the same.

The back of the book says: "There is something Bronteish about this account of a young girl hungering for life and love in the harsh outback plains of NSW" and I think this may go someway to explain the trouble I had with it.

I did wonder though if Sybylla's protestations against Harold's wedding proposal weren't because the poor girl was gay but had no words to describe her condition and not the slightest notion of the state even if there were the words in her vocabulary. I don't think the man she says she wants ever existed beyond what Harold Beecham was so if she wanted a man, Harold was it.

Still, I've read it and am glad to have done so.
Thanks to Miss-GoneWest for the opportunity. :)

I enjoyed the book, she was so strongminded but not for her own good, which was a pity. I wish it has ended different, but I like a book that is different to what you think. I sent it on to the UK to the next person this morning. I also like the bookmark idea and put another one in so the next person can keep it. I sent it airmail economy so it shouldnt take too long it is now out of Australia. Thanks for the good read miss-gonewest.

Journal Entry 9 by tagesmann on Saturday, March 26, 2005
Received today. That didn't take too long. I will be able to start it in a week or so.

Journal Entry 10 by tagesmann on Friday, April 15, 2005
Thoroughly enjoyable! A remarkable novel considering when it was written. I didn't sympathize with Sybylla but then I am not sure the reader is supposed to. I think the novel demonstrates the arrogance of youth very well. So often that arrogance is not caused because we know (or think we know) better than others but because we don't know what we want or how to describe it. Sybylla knew that Harold was not what she wanted but I don't think she new what she wanted. And I think she was telling us that, in retrospect, she was wrong. I thought the ending was very good and would have been disappointed by a different ending.

Posted to MarciNYC today.

Journal Entry 11 by MarciNYC from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania USA on Tuesday, April 19, 2005
Wow! This must have come over on the Concorde! (Never mind that I know it no longer runs, but...) I'm in the middle of one book right now and will start this in the next couple days and get it moved along shortly.

Journal Entry 12 by MarciNYC from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania USA on Tuesday, May 10, 2005
I'm having quite a difficult time getting into this book right now and the fact that life if going ass over heels in the next week isn't going to make finding time to read any easier. I'm sending this off to the next person instead of letting it languish here in Jersey.

Journal Entry 13 by sqdancer on Thursday, May 19, 2005
Received safe and sound.

Journal Entry 14 by sqdancer on Monday, June 13, 2005
Definitely a teenager. Self-consciously self-aware and yet has no perspective regarding herself or her world. Even I had better self-esteem at that age! Is it that she does not want to marry or just convinces herself that she doesn't, because she does not feel worthy of being loved? Would that explain why she kept trying to hurt Harold before he could hurt her?

Sent to Spain via Air mail.

P.S.
have found the bookmark with the names on it.. it is still
there.. stupid me! ;-)

Edit:
Well, I have finally finished this book. Sorry it took me some time but I found it not an easy read. I was sometimes soo annoyed with Sybylla's behaviour. And her self pity... my dear..

So this book will be on its way to France on Monday since I already have chich's address!

I was really excited to read this book because I'd never read a book written by an Australian author before:)

The book is very well-written and I found it interesting because it depicts life in the Australian outback. Still, I had a hard time with Sybylla's character and didn't find her likeable at all. I found her to be extremely self-centered and somewhat obsessive, and I don't think she really knew what she wanted after all.

Anyway, I'm glad I read this book, it's always interesting to discover a new author:) Thanks for sharing miss-gonewest!

Updated January 30: book sent to Deadsteen today.

Journal Entry 24 by deadsteen from White Plains, New York USA on Monday, March 6, 2006
Arrived today. Have to finish "The Truth About the Drug Companies" and then I'm ready. I love all the bookmarks and postcards that are traveling with this book.

April 15-- Ready to send this book on. I enjoyed it, especially the descriptions of the Outback. Most of Sybella thoughts and actions didn't make sense to me, so I couldn't relate to the story very well.

Journal Entry 25 by queensknob from Wytheville, Virginia USA on Tuesday, May 2, 2006
Received today...will read as soon as possible. Finishing up this book, Pm'd for next address.

On its way home to miss-gonewest on May 30, 2006.

Journal Entry 26 by miss-gonewest from Perth City, Western Australia Australia on Monday, May 15, 2006
Aussieangel wishes to be skipped so I’ve just posted a request in the forums to see if any other readers want to participate, before the book comes home to me.

Hopefully this can make some new friends, if not, it will return to me and go onto Mt TBR.

Thanks so all for participating & for keeping this moving along. I hope you enjoyed it!
