Call Me By Your Name is the story of a sudden and powerful romance that blooms between seventeen-year-old Elio and his father's house guest Oliver during a restless summer on the Italian Riviera.
Unrelenting currents of obsession and fear, fascination and desire threaten to overwhelm the lovers who at first feign indifference to the charge between them. What grows from the depths of their souls is a romance of scarcely six weeks' duration, and an experience that marks them for a lifetime.
For what the two discover on the Riviera and during a sultry evening in Rome is the one thing they both already fear they may never truly find again: total intimacy.

Wow! A beautifully told story of 6 weeks in summer.

Thanks very much, amberC.
I actually tried watching the film adaptation a year or so ago and gave up not very far into it. This surprised me, but there was just something very annoying about it. However I’m usually much better with books than films, so it didn’t put me off reading the original.
The book is certainly beautifully written and evokes so much yearning and vulnerability it’s almost painful to have access to Elio’s thoughts and feelings in such detail. But there was just way too much of the obsessive rumination, overthinking, misinterpretation, vacillation, and angst going on and on and on in the earlier part of the book for me to rate it any higher. We get it. I know he is an introverted, intelligent teenager who thinks a lot, but that particular aspect was far too drawn out.
However, the last two sections of the book totally redeemed it, and I’m glad I persevered. They added some depth to both the characters and the narrative, illustrating well how one singular relationship early in life can have lasting repercussions.

Wow, another Wishlist book. Thanks for the tag crimson-tide.
Wow, I have just wept my way to the end of this beautiful story. I loved the writing of this slow paced summer romance. Elio, only 17 years old, is discovering his sexuality as he timidly learns to express his wants and feelings.
The six weeks of Oliver staying with Elio’s family was just like a Summer holiday when we think we have all the time in the World to suddenly discover there is no time left.
The passionate romance is the culmination of the six weeks, but the story continues as both men move on with their lives, but never forget this “heart of heart” love for each other.
The writing was superb and I savoured every word.
“Over the years I’d lodged him in the permanent past, my pluperfect lover, put him on ice, stuffed him with memories and mothballs like a hunted ornament confabulating with the ghost of all my evenings. I’d dust him off from time to time and then put him back on the mantelpiece. He no longer belonged to earth or to life”

Very much looking forward to reading this but obviously I need to check my supply of tissues first. Caught today at Riddik Cafe.
Aciman builds a novel based on innermost thoughts and the most painful of emotions. This story is an intoxicatingly romantic, intimate, physical and at times miserable read. Towards the end the tissue supply was rapidly disappearing...
