This is the first novel I have read by Yoshimoto, and I have to say I enjoyed it even more than the short story collections. From the very beginning I was drawn into the world of the characters. There was a lot of melancholy and suspense. I also love how Yoshimoto infuses a sensual charge to the relationships between women, even those who are not lesbians. She explores her themes with rich and poignant dialogue, and her characters' flaws make them all the more beautiful to know.

This is my third book written by this author. They are always strange to me yet I am always drawn in and compelled to read on and read more.

Journal Entry 11 by tiatia from Fredericksburg, Virginia USA on Tuesday, August 30, 2005
Received as part of BookRelay.com. It goes on my TBR pile for now but I'll journal once I finish reading it. Thanks for sending it, she's a new author for me.

Journal Entry 12 by tiatia from Fredericksburg, Virginia USA on Wednesday, February 1, 2006
Good, not great. Maybe my expectations for a 20 yr old something who got rave reviews was too high. I never did figure out why the characters did what they did. The ending was a little to out in left field for me. These folks need some serious help.

That said, I plan on reading another one of her books before I say "no" to her. Will try to send this one onward.

It's here in Miami. Nicely wrapped, tiatia. Attractive book. Special BX label. I'm looking forward to this Banana since I liked Kitchen

Journal Entry 15 by gnissorckoob from Miami, Florida USA on Thursday, April 13, 2006
Finished it at 4:30 this morning. I really liked it
- the spare, haiku-like style
– the tension that keeps you turning the pages
– the uniqueness: no cliches or predictability here
– the way the author does not explain
– the levels of meaning
– details
– the ending, leaving much to ponder

What it’s about: Four young people, barely out of their teens, find themselves pulled together by common threads in their histories. Events twist and turn throughout a summer in Tokyo. Certain manuscripts and their translations keep coming up. What happens is “shockingly beautiful, enough to make you crazy.”
