I picked this (not this copy, obviously) up for my daughter's birthday back when it was first out - knew I was going to find it funny when I saw the supposed magazine "Great Scottish Houses You Can't Afford"! The humour may be very broad, and heaven knows she doesn't even begin to aim for realism in her fantasy, but we really enjoyed it. Saw BlossomU had it on her wish list, so it's off to her for a surprise RABCK. Have fun! :)

What a lovely surprise! Many thanks, hero! The book looks irresistible, I am looking forward to reading it. And many many thanks yet again.

The sign on the gate to StregaSchloss:

Warning
Trespassers will be
a) Served for brekfast
b) turned into frogs
c) forced to eat Brussel sprouts

I had seen this book on sale, in translation, and was quite curious, many thanks, Hero! I can not imagine how some of the jokes would have survived the translator ;) Gliori mixes magic with computer technology, and it makes for some unexpected mix - I can see modern children truly enjoying that. I did not think it was great children s literature, but ít was fun. Now I would love to pass it on to somebody else, Hero if you got any ideas for the "victim" let me know :) And I must go and consider how to celebrate my (still distant) BC anniversary :)

I saw this book in BlossomU's bookshelf and had to take a look. I couldn't resist! :)

This book seemed like a cross between Mary Poppins and The Adams Family! Although it was an enjoyable read I couldn't help but feel disappointed. I know this is a children's book but I wonder if even a child won't find some unrealistic parts in this book. Sending rats and people through the internet? Doesn't that sound a bit out of this world? Even for magic? I don't know, maybe I'm just not used to this modern side of magic. Maybe I do prefer wands to computers, call me old fashioned!
My favourite characters were definitely the three beasts... They were hilarious! :)
Thanks for lending me this book BlossomU! It will be back with you in the next meeting.

well i liked it, definitely adams family and at times a bit gory. maybe i wouldn't send this to a child without first requesting the parent to read it, but then it was funny also and i liked the accepted craziness :)

A surprise package! Even a brown-paper-package-tied-up-with-string package! (~sings "These are a few of my favorite things ... ") Thanks, katayoun! I hadn't heard of this book before, but it looks like just the sort of thing I enjoy!

Thanks so much!

I'm only about half done this, but I had to comment: I love the computer's insults!

"MAY YOUR HARD DISK CEASE TO SPIN, AND ALL YOUR FILES RASP. MAY ALL YOUR CRASHES BE FATAL AND YOUR REBOOTS BE DOC MARTENS ..."

I'm really enjoying this book. I've never been one to let a little thing like realism get in the way of a good fantasy :-)

I finished the book this evening. Katayoun, thanks again for sending me this book. I loved it!

While I recognize why readers found the magic system unrealistic and the violence a little over the top, neither is of great concern to me. I simply enjoyed the humor and the fabulous characters. I will definitely be looking for more books in this series!
