This sequel to Leaving One Foot Island continues the captivating story of Tuaine who has now happily returned to the Cook Islands following her disastrous term in Auckland.
She becomes friends with Adam, an Australian boy with an intriguing Jewish family and history that links him to the wide world in a way that fascinates Tuaine. But Adam is destined to return to Australia to go to law school, and it is clear that his parents have not factored an island girl into their beloved son's future. At the same time as Tuaine's friendship is developing with Adam, though, it is becoming clear that someone on the island is trying to do her harm: someone has learned the terrible truth about her time in Auckland and is threatening to make her secret public.
Lay has perfectly captured the intimacy and pace of island life in this gentle telling of a meeting between two worlds, and the curiosity and admiration that can ensue from such meetings. At the same time, he skilfully tackles the dark side of cross-cultural encounters, and writes evocatively of the alienation experienced by Tuaine in New Zealand, and as she meets Adam's ambitious parents.

Picked up at the Wellington meeting, this book should help me read more books set in Pacifica. Thanks very much.

A gentle teen book, looking at first love and family illness and betrayal of friend's. I think it hits the mark of creating a realistic look at life. it was nicety have the sailing and sea activity mentioned, as well as cultural things like being raised by grandparents, going to church, and the food eaten.

It took a bit to get into the writing style, as the author was a great fan of long sentences with many commas, so he can describe in great detail the lovely, peaceful, environment of the island.

Reading Leaving One Foot Island, it's clear that Tuaine misses her home and has a hard time adjusting to life in Auckland, but this sequel provides a better sense of why: what is different about Tuaine's island home and lifestyle. The author strikes a good balance between teenage troubles - which many teens will identify with - and the things that make life in the islands special.

Since I'm participating in kiwiinengland's 2015 Around the World Reading Challenge, I'll count this book for the Cook Islands.
