(I'm thinking I should have classified this book as humour - but oh no, its travel according to the back. So that told me)

"The award-winning Are You Dave Gorman? is the oddly touching story of how Perrier Award nominee Dave Gorman went in search of all the world's other Dave Gormans.
Fans of the TV version of this travelogue-cum-Arthurian-quest will know how it all began: one minute Dave and his flatmate Danny Wallace (himself a talented producer and writer) were kicking their heels in suburban London, the next they were on the night-train to Scotland to see assistant manager of East Fife Football Club David Gorman, so Dave Gorman could prove to Danny Wallace there were other Dave Gormans--and thereby win a drinker's bet. Such was the buzz Dave Gorman got from meeting Dave Gorman, he then went on a half year schlep around the world seeking out yet more Dave Gormans: in Ireland, Israel, Norway, America, with a sarcastically derisive Danny Wallace in constant and niggling attendance.

Things that work on TV--or start as drunken bets--don't always make the most successful of books and there are times when Are You Dave Gorman? seems a little contrived, not to say fatuously pointless. But such is the charm, candour, and wit of the two writers' alternating voices, any qualms come to seem churlish, if not thick-headed: it's the very frivolousness and absurdity of Are You Dave Gorman? that makes it so boyishly likeable." (from amazon.co.uk)

I got this book for Xmas last year and had finished it by Boxing day. Very, very funny, and very, very silly.

Release planned for Sunday, January 18, 2004 at RABCK in Mailed to fellow bookcrosser, Postal Release Controlled Releases.

This is a special release for sunny27 of Brisbane. She has been an absolute angel to me, and because I'm in Australia in January, I will be taking the opportunity of posting this book (which is on her wishlist) to her in Brisbane.

I hope you enjoy it...

I was having a really average day. My holidays were slipping by at a rate of knots, it was hot and muggy and I was trying to get ready to catch a plane that afternoon without working up too much of a sweat. In the letterbox I find the pink slip that says "Go to the post office, go directly to the post office, do not pass Go, do not collect $200, do not be more than 48hrs or we'll throw your parcel away." Fantastic. So I dragged my sorry self up the street and was handed a parcel that had Swisstoni written on the back.

What the? I grinned. I pulled out a book - from my wishlist. I smiled. I looked at the message on the bookmark. I positively beamed!

I took this book on holidays and devoured it in a day. It made me laugh out loud and drove my friend nuts. By the end of the book I was sick to death of the word DaveGorman, but otherwise you've made my week!. Thanks so much, Tim. I have made the hunting of Wisdens my life's work.

I've resolved to hunt down an Australian Dave Gorman (they didn't bother to look this far) and pass the book on.

Journal Entry 4 by sunny27 from Gympie, Queensland Australia on Sunday, April 25, 2004
I couldn't find any Dave Gormans around here, and I've had a couple of requests, so I'm sending it on it's merry way.

Very silly and very funny! The scarey thing is that, having read both of Dave Gorman's books and seen his latest live show, I'm beginning to understand why he gets obsessed with things! In fact, would Dave be considered my obsession?

Will be posted to fushmush shortly.

Yay I had a whole bunch of packages on my desk this morning when I returned from my holiday. I love packages!

I have a few other rays to read but I'll get to it soon :D.

It took me a while to get into this book. In the beginning it seemed a bit repetitive... Dave and Danny find and meet a Dave Gorman, Danny is cranky at Dave, Hanne is cranky at Danny, repeat. To me, it also seemed like they'd just submitted the script from the stage show as the book. It read more like a play than a novel.

However, when I finally succumbed and just let myself relax, I enjoyed the book. It had some laugh out loud moments and by the end of it I was a cheering them on! I've seen the Googlewhack stage show which was hillarious. Go see it if you get a chance.

I will be passing this onto TQD at meetup on July 13th (unless I manage to see her beforehand).

Picked up from fushmush this morning, over a nice brunch. Thanks!

Journal Entry 12 by tqd from Sydney CBD, New South Wales Australia on Sunday, August 1, 2004
Having read both Googlewhack Adventure and now this, I feel qualified to say: This man is seriously insane.

And, scarily enough, this time there are two of them off on an insane journey.

But it was very, very funny. Especially towards the end, when they finally stopped flying all the way across the world to just meet *one* Dave Gorman, and did it in a more sensible fashion. Hmmm, I wonder if I have any Norwegian blood in me. :)

I've got guinevere69's address already, so I shall pop this in the post this afternoon!

Journal Entry 13 by guinevere69 from Willetton, Western Australia Australia on Thursday, August 5, 2004
got in mail today thanks Tania
Didn't enjoy this as much as "Join Me". It seems such a fabulous way to spend one's life but where the hell do they get the money from! I can see now why Hanne left Danny in the end, this sort of behaviour would wear thin after a while. I enjoyed Danny's writting more than Dave's, his sense of humor is more like mine. Still enjoyable

Delighted to get this. I thought it might duplicate the tv series but in fact it fills in the gaps.
Greatly enjoying it and will soon pass it on. I know of 3 more people with my name, 2 in US & 1 in Australia so am tempted...........
Thanks Swisstoni & all who passed it on.

Journal Entry 17 by loribee from Birmingham, West Midlands United Kingdom on Monday, February 28, 2005
My nonBX son hardly put this down all weekend. The tv was off & computer standing idle!! His comment was that he had never laughed out loud at a book so much.
I am about half way through now and hear Dave's distinctive voice & delivery in my head from the tv series. My son said he did too & we wonder whether we'd enjoy it so much without having seen & heard this extraordinary person!! Off to hey-miki soon.

On its way to hey-miki in London tomorrow.

Journal Entry 19 by hey-miki from -- Somewhere in London 🤷‍♀️ , Greater London United Kingdom on Thursday, May 19, 2005
Well this one turned up as a complete surprise (what with my bad memory) but a very happy one! I've been reading too many hard going books lately and this is just the sort of light-hearted silliness I need to remedy the situation.
And what a genius cover design. It fills me with so much rose-tinted nostalgia for 80's board games.

Journal Entry 20 by hey-miki from -- Somewhere in London 🤷‍♀️ , Greater London United Kingdom on Tuesday, June 14, 2005
Ah. A jolly book.
I finished it yesterday and can't seem to remember much about it now. But it made me laugh. Especially that bit about El Al security. I fly to Israel regularly and they've never subjected me to the full-on 40 minute interrogation, thanks to my dazzling displays of GCSE Modern Hebrew complete with dodgy accent, and the fact that I have a sensible answer to the question "What is the purpose of your visit?". Here's a little tip guys: next time say "holiday"

Thanks for sharing it sunny27!

Journal Entry 21 by JonAzrael from Plano, Texas USA on Saturday, June 18, 2005
This arrived yesterday along with a couple of Scottish postcards and a 'G' bookmark (is someone missing their favourite bookmark, btw?), just in time for me to have something to read in the queue for Wimbledon on Tuesday morning. If it's as good as everyone says, I should be done with it by the time I get through the gates!

Journal Entry 22 by JonAzrael from Plano, Texas USA on Friday, June 24, 2005
Ok, I wasn't quite done by the time I got into Wimbledon, but I have to admit it certainly is one of those books that you keep thinking "oh, I have time for one more chapter. I'll keep reading."

Like guinevere69 I found Danny's style of writing funnier and a lot easier to read than Dave's. I also have to say I admire Danny, and even more so Hanne, for being able to put up with Dave for so long. I'd love to be able to travel the world even in short trips like this, but the sheer obsession shown by Dave throughout his quest would be more than exasperating.

Just finished reading this today. Very funny journey of two friends. I enjoyed this book, but felt that both Danny and Dave winced out of the bet towards the end by getting people to change their name to Dave Gorman. If they were REALLY committed, they would have travelled further. I feel sorry for Henne. I know if my boyfriend went galavanting around the world after a bet, I would probably be equally twisted about the whole affair. Funny way to sort of learn about parts of the world, or at least their airports and Dave Gormans.

Will probably wild release a book meetup to see if a Dave Gorman picks it up.
