This is a fun book; a quirky little romance with an interesting twist. The narrator, John Smith, is a man who works for the World Book of Records. His job is to verify and document new world records. This subplot makes for some interesting sidebars throughout the story.
Smith finds himself under pressure from his boss to find a record-breaking attempt that will garner wide media publicity, or else. So Smith hunts through the submission letters and stumbles upon an anonymous note that says a man in Nebraska is eating a 747. He looks on the Internet for a story about this man, but can’t find one. Then he discovers a small blurb about a 747 crashing onto a Nebraska farm, so maybe there is something to the story after all.
Smith travels to Nebraska to investigate. Sure enough, the owner of this farm saws off a hunk of the jet every day and grinds it into a rough powdery mixture before he ingests it. But he’s not trying to set a world record. He’s doing it in the name of love; to prove to a woman named Willa that he loves her. And as Smith learns more about this woman, he falls in love with her, too.
