The story of Africa told through a day in the fictional East African country of Kuwisha.
Funny thing, expectations. I started reading the book ages ago but gave up soon as I was expecting a Mma Ramotswe type easy going tale which this isn't. Now, on second attempt I didn't have expectations and really enjoyed the book though it's everything but light hearted.
The characters represent the people of a shanty town, the government of Kuwisha, NGO's, Wolrd Bank, news reporters, the different operators shaping Africa. It's all pretty cynical, even those who are there supposedly to help and do good have alterior motives and their own interests at heart. It's not alla doom and gloom though, despite the odds, at least some people do come out well in the end.
