I think you might be thinking of "Survivor" by Chuck Palanhiuk. He's also the author of "Fight Club." Fantastic book, by the way.

Actually, my favorite Maguire is by far "Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West." I don't think "Confessions" is really part of a series. Both are a lot of fun, though.

Just got my first issue a couple of days ago as well! Filled with semi-useless tidbits of information. Right up my alley!

Luckily, my parents are always willing to feed my book cravings, and they can usually count on getting books from me as well. This year I got Life of Pi, The Lovely Bones, Word Virus (Burroughs collection) and the Compl…

A couple that I might recommend aren't strictly self-help books, but I thought were wonderful - two books by the Dalai Lama, An Open Heart and The Art of Happiness. They are obviously from the buddhist perspective, but …

Nah, that's like trying to translate Finnegan's Wake! Just take each term in context. It's not the terms themselves that are important. You can get a pretty good feel for the book without looking up every little thing…

I use the Good Housekeeping Illustrated cookbook alot. It's a big one, but it has all of the explanations most of us non-cooking people need for cooking terms, measures, etc. Fairly basic food, but very comprehensive.

Ooooh! Another Faust fan! I took a course in college on the Faust theme. Have you read The Master and Margarita by Bulgakov? It is a very strange Russian satire with a Faustian theme. Obviously Christopher Marlowe's…

I reread a number of books on an almost yearly basis, but one particularly fun series that I have to read again and again is the Hitchhiker's Guide series. When I feel I need something silly, when I need to take life a …

Definitely Joseph Campbell!! One of the best writers on world mythology. Though you will get a bit of comparative analysis of myth throughout the world, his books are the best. Frasier is another classic, though defin…

I would say that, as a community of prolific readers, most of us have expanded our world view and strive to examine things from different perspectives. I have found that many of the people I've encountered who don't rea…

My father told me he got a D in high school chemistry because he sat in the back of the class reading Dracula the entire semester. Not something most parents would confess to their children, especially one who was frequ…

Be prepared for a bit of a difficult read, though I'll agree that it is a very creepy book. The mazelike text may give you a bit of a headache by about halfway through, though. Just be patient and let it suck you in. …

Reminds me of just about every walk home from the bus stop (and the bus ride as well) during grade school. All of the other kids tearing down the street to catch the cartoons at home, and myself inching along with my no…
