A number of publishers pay for those linkings. For awhile, it was the only way to get recommended. Or else you had to be part of their co-op program, but essentially, that was it.

If relay participants don't know that there are forums, they clearly aren't looking at the site. On the lefthand side of the front page is a menu. The word FORUM is included.

Here's the reason why I support what was done: the relay itself laid out a rule that you had to replace the book BEFORE the relay hit the morgue. That requires tending, of course, and makes the relay a bit more demanding…

when I was in Grad school, all I needed was my student ID and I got a card to the local public library. Became quite a regular there, too.

It's a bit easier than the relays, in that if you see something you want, if you have a credit, you can request it be mailed to you. You have the freedom to use your credits when you will.
