I really enjoyed Cornelia Funke's Inkheart series. Another good read is The Historian which is based on the Legend of Dracula.

My sons loved Lemony Snicket's Unfortunate Series as well as Sideways School is Falling Down by Sachar. I loved the Ramona books by Beverly Cleary and Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing by Judy Blume.

This is not only the first sentence, but also the first paragraph of Independent Study by Joelle Charbonneau. Independent Study is the second book in The Testing series. It's pretty good.
