Windward High School
Ferndale School District received a grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation to support the creation of a small, technology-enriched high school that can offer students an opportunity for in-depth, real world learning through community partnerships. The goal is allow all students to become high achievers who are ready for college, work, and civic contribution.
The "Connecting School & Community Initiative" is an important part of Windward High School. The program's goals include facilitating parent and community involvement in the development of the new high school and finding creative avenues for student participation in the Ferndale community.
This Bookcrossing ID was created by a student at the school as a project to release books in our greater community by involving the entire school body and teaching staff as bookcrossers. It is hoped that through this project we can increase literacy in our community, increase awareness of Windward High School, and get some real-world and personally meaningful data for statistical analysis.
This ID created by PTM 6/21/2005. Goal is to gather 1200 books by 9/2005 (done by 9/22/2005!), write Grant Proposal by 10/2005, and start releasing books by 11/2005.
Update #1!
Yes, the project is still in the works. The school is being sticky about the grant unless I have a local non-profit in on the project. But every non-profit I contact refuses to pass the books on. They just don't get the concept... Don't despair - I'm not hoarding your books and they WILL be released!
Update #2 August 2006
I'm giving up on the original idea due to the problems above. To keep the flow going, I found every book sent by the generous people below, and released them at a local Art and Music Festival (every one was picked up). I'll release all the others in my bookshelf as fast as I can.
