La biblioteca conserva una colección documental especializada en arte, destinada al servicio de estudiosos e investigadores de esa disciplina. Desde su creación en 1985 se ha consolidado como un centro de investigación con el doble objetivo de satisfacer las necesidades tanto del propio museo como del público interesado. El ámbito cronológico que atiende abarca, en líneas generales, los límites establecidos por la colección artística del museo, es decir, desde el siglo XII hasta la actualidad. Además, por su propio ámbito de referencia, realiza un especial esfuerzo por recopilar documentación relativa al arte vasco.
Junto al importante conjunto de monografías y catálogos de exposición de artistas, cuenta con una amplia selección de títulos de museología, colecciones de museos, teoría del arte, técnicas artísticas, conservación y restauración, historia del arte y movimientos artísticos, arquitectura, escultura, artes decorativas, dibujo, diseño, pintura, artes gráficas, fotografía, cine, publicaciones del museo y catálogos de subastas. Cuenta además con una significativa colección de referencia (enciclopedias, diccionarios, historias del arte, repertorios bibliográficos, etcétera) y una sección de hemeroteca de libre acceso. En la actualidad el fondo documental ofrece un número aproximado de 33.900 monografías, 311 títulos de publicaciones periódicas, de las cuales 123 corresponden a colecciones en curso, y 33.500 catálogos de mano y folletos.

The library's collections of documents specialising in art is at the complete disposal of students and researchers. Since it was founded in 1985, the library has consolidated itself as a research centre with the double aim of satisfying not only the needs of the Museum itself, but also those of those members of the public who might be interested. Generally speaking, the chronological span of the library covers the same boundaries as those laid down by the artistic collections of the Museum: in other words, from the XII century down to the present. Furthermore, given its reference field, the library makes particular effort to compile documentation regarding Basque art.
In addition to an important collection of monographic and exhibition catalogues of artists, the library also has a wide selection of books dealing with museology, museum collections, the theory of art, artistic techniques, preservation and restoration, the history of art and artistic movements, architecture, sculpture, decorative arts, drawing, design, painting, graphic arts, photography, cinema, museum publications and auction catalogues. It also has an important reference collection (encyclopaedias, dictionaries, books about the history of art, bibliographic repertoires, etc.) as well as newspaper library that may be freely consulted. At present, the number of documents it contains is approximately 33,900 monographic catalogues, 311 periodic publications of which some 123 correspond to actually subscribed collections, and 33,500 small brochures and leaflets.
