Anti-appeaser. Current appetite is for perigean (or posthumous) paeans of pols and empires (except SPQR). Always attracted to anthropology, history, cultural criticism, late 19th & 20th century dialectics of most any sort (forget Pol Pot, however). Fan of 19th century fiction with emphasis on late Victorians. 20th century hero--Winston Churchill. Greatest American president--Thomas Jefferson. Most interesting American president--Richard Nixon. Most confounding American president--Bill Clinton. Most confused American president--Warren G. Harding. Greatest reading accomplishment--the Durants' "Western Civilization" (mine is NOT a Book Crossing candidate). Most enjoyed readings--any Russian fiction. Most enjoyed poets--Emily Dickinson, Reiner Marie Rilke, August Bowlyer. Most chilling read ever--"Utopia in Power" (again, not a Book Crossing candidate). Most depressing (but strangely delightful) readings--Kafka, Camus. Literary fluff--Capote, Vidal. No single favorite American fiction writer (i.e., I'd have to call in a C-160 to haul American fiction if I'm stranded on a desert island). No such thing as a bad opera. The pipe organ is the greatest invention of man that doesn't explode (take that, Nobel). Mozart lives. Vote early and often. See you in church on Sunday. Scotties rule.
