This proved to be the light, frothy, fast, fun read that I was hoping for. Very enjoyable! My one quibble is that I didn't always feel as though I completely understood the motivations behind the characters' actions. However, the Mallorcan setting and Straub's prose were both so pleasant that I found that I really didn't mind!

CONTROLLED RELEASE NOTES:
I'm adding this to the Surprise Paperback Bookbox.
I have chosen this from the Surprise Paperback Bookbox.
This is on my shortlist to read this month. I am listing this in the ABC VBB.
A family goes on vacation to Mallorca taking along the family baggage.
Dad has recently had an affair with a young intern. He is on the verge of getting kicked out of his marriage, and no wonder. He doesn't want to lose his marriage and family. Should have thought of that earlier. He has already lost his job because of this. He is in the dog house, and like a dog, he acts subservient and charming, trying to get back in his wife's good graces. Good thing she can't see his thoughts when he thinks about the details of his affair.
Mom is righteously angry. She doesn't know which way to go, divorce or forgive her husband. But she has her two children there with her on vacation and she does a lot of cooking which makes her happy. She has brought along her best friend, who is a gay man, and the best friend's husband.
She hires a Spanish tutor for her seventeen year old daughter. She flirts with all available men, including the young Spanish tutor.
Son has never matured into the grown man he should be. He drinks, cheats on his long time girlfriend, is in overwhelming debt, and has no career to speak of. He has brought along his girlfriend whom the family doesn't care for.
Daughter's goal is to lose her virginity before she goes to college in the fall. Spanish tutor is convenient.
Does this sound like a good book? Maybe you will like it. I didn't.
I gave it a second star for its readability, for its page turningness.
