How should one be able to reduce her Mount TBR, if in the middle of Korea the reading fuel is going to an end?! Luckily there are book stores at airports...

From the cover:
"When Dorothy triumphed over the Wicked Witch of the West in L. Frank Baum's classic tale, we heared only her side of the story. But what about her arch-nemesis, the mysterious Witch? Where did she come from? How did she become so wicked?
Gregory Maguire creates a fantasy world rich and vivid that we will never look at Oz the same way again. Wicked is about a land where animals talk and strive to be treated like first-class citizens, Munchkinlanders seek the comfort of middle-class stability, and the Tin Man becomes a victim of domestic violence. And then there is the little green-skinned girl named Elpaba, who will grow up to become the infamous Wicked Witch of the West - a smart, prickly, and misunderstood creature who challenges all our preconceived notions about the nature of good and evil."

Gelesen im Rahmen der Bergabbau-Challenge im Juli 2011 - Thema: xyz

I have to admit that I have never read the Wizard of Oz nor seen the movie. Maybe the better, for maybe I wouldn't have liked one of my childhood heros be turned into a fascistoid dictator... So I could enjoy the book totally unbiased. Or rather I enjoyed most of it.

I really liked the first half of the book, the childhood and adolescence of Elphaba. What I esteemed highest was, that we see her always from the outside, through the eyes of the people who are nearest to her.

Maybe this is what I didn't like at the second half: That we get to close to her and her inner struggle. From the moment of the trip to the Vinkus the story first gets kind of boring (not only because of the many reflections what's good and what's evil) and later on kind of hard to belive. Especially in the last chapters I no longer could follow Elphabas inner life.

If the book really did change my notions about good and evil? - I think not so. There are more dazzling characters in literature who have done this before. Nevertheless it was a good read. I liked the setting in this dark, hopeless fantasy world.
