How do you like the book so far?
I think the book is very confusing.

Journal Entry 4 by jacobstephanz from Albuquerque, New Mexico USA on Friday, September 26, 2003
pg. 17-18
Why do you think Miss Caroline was mad at Scout for being able to read and write? Why did she say that Scout being able to read already, "damaged" her? Do you think Miss Caroline has a reason to be unhappy?
I'm not sure, at least yet, why Miss Caroline is unhappy. I think that she should be happy Scout is ahead of the pack. I have no idea why she said that Scout was "damaged" by being able to read before everybody else. I can't find a reason for Miss Caroline's actions yet, but as I read maybe I will find out.

Journal Entry 5 by wingAnonymousFinderwing on Friday, September 26, 2003
Yes, Alex, I do think the book can be confusing. That's because the book is written for advanced readers. If you don't understand a word, look it up. How is the book confusing to you?

i think that this book is hard to read at first but gets easyer to read.

i think that miss. caroline is crazy and is mad that scout can read at such a so called young age

Journal Entry 7 by wingAnonymousFinderwing on Friday, September 26, 2003
Andrew,
I checked out that website. It's seems pretty complete and informative. Can you believe she stopped writing books? I think she should keep writing since she is such a good writer.

why did jem and charels start to disclude scout?

why did jem call scout a girl?

what does miss. Maudie like to do in the summer?

Journal Entry 9 by Andrewmck from Albuquerque, New Mexico USA on Friday, October 3, 2003
jem and charels discluded scout because scout was suposedly acting like a girl.

jem called scout a girl because scout was afriad that they were going to be caught and wanted to play somthing elese.

Miss. Maudie loves to garden.

Journal Entry 10 by jacobstephanz from Albuquerque, New Mexico USA on Friday, October 3, 2003
On pg. 32 Aticus was reading Jem and Scout a newspaper article about flag-pole sitting. I became interested and wondered who started it, when, where, and why?
Well, I found a website (http://louisville.com/loumag/may97/endins5.htm)
that might be the newspaper article Atticus was reading to Jem and Scout. The article tells who started it all (Alvin "Shipwreck" Kelly) and when, where, and why. Go take a look. It's really interesting.

It was strange how miss maudie said that Boo radley is still alive. And how they find stuff in the tree. also how the children play that game where they act like the radley family.

Journal Entry 12 by alex13 from Albuquerque, New Mexico USA on Friday, October 3, 2003
If everyone thinks he is dead how does miss maudie know he is alive? why do they think the gum is poisenous ? Its nweird how the kids play that game when they are scared of Boo

Journal Entry 13 by Andrewmck from Albuquerque, New Mexico USA on Friday, October 3, 2003
jacob the site you gave us is really cool. man 100 hours is a long time on a flag pole. his putt must hurt.

Journal Entry 14 by jacobstephanz from Albuquerque, New Mexico USA on Friday, October 3, 2003
I think Dill and Jem are discluding Scout because she is a girl and they are boys. I mean boys like different things than girls and when Scout doesn't like something they just say too bad.
One reason Jem called Scout a girl is she is a girl. Also, Scout's kinda of like a tomboy and when someone calls her a girl she feels like that's a bad thing because she thinks girls play with dolls and stuff, but she doesn't like that stuff.
Yes, Miss Maudie loves to garden in the summer.

Journal Entry 15 by alex13 from Albuquerque, New Mexico USA on Friday, October 3, 2003
hey Jacob that was a cool web site. It looked pretty good
Alex

Journal Entry 16 by jacobstephanz from Albuquerque, New Mexico USA on Friday, October 3, 2003
Yeah, that was a pretty cool site Andrew. Sorry I didn't give my opinion. I thought the site was informative and funny. I can't belive that guy actually would do that, especially in a storm. Well it started a cool tradition.

Journal Entry 17 by alex13 from Albuquerque, New Mexico USA on Friday, October 3, 2003
Jem called Scout a girl because she didn't want to do what they told her to do. miss maudie likes to go outside.

Journal Entry 18 by Andrewmck from Albuquerque, New Mexico USA on Friday, October 3, 2003
i think that boo radley is still alive mainly because scout heard laughter when she was in there hard.

i think boo is putting the things in the tree for the kids.

i don't know how the kids play there games.

Journal Entry 19 by jacobstephanz from Albuquerque, New Mexico USA on Friday, October 3, 2003
Alex, I don't know if Miss Maudie really knows if Boo's alive, but she probably has some connection to them. The stuff in tree, I think, is Boo radley being nice because he's friendly and leaves that stuff on purpose for Jem and Scout in the tree. They think gum is poisonous because they've been threw years of school, that anything coming from the Radley property is poison. Jem and Scout probably play the Radley game because when you're scared of something, you also become curious. This their way of looking into the Radley lives. P.S. Alex, write us personal messages now telling us are rolls and pg. numbers.

Journal Entry 20 by Andrewmck from Albuquerque, New Mexico USA on Friday, October 10, 2003
wasn't that strange with all the stuff in the tree. i think it was boo radley. then Mr. Radley fills the tree with cement even though the tree was perfectly healthy. strange!! (pg 62)
i wounder if the fire that burned Mss.Maudie's house started itself or someone else started it. (pg 73)
do you think the dog on pages 92-96 was really mad or just sick.
atticus has a pretty good shoot. (pg 96)

Journal Entry 21 by alex13 from Albuquerque, New Mexico USA on Friday, October 10, 2003
Hey guys go to this site and check it out a little. Its about Alabama which is where the book is set. Its at http://encarta.msn.comencnet/refpages/refAFAF.aspx?refid=701505903

To kill a Mockingbird is set in Alabama it is a slow moving slow talking place. There is a few ethnic groups but mostly blacks and whites. It is very hot and humid there . I think it was an informative site. Ilike how it shows you the population and stuff. Hope you liked it!

Journal Entry 22 by jacobstephanz from Albuquerque, New Mexico USA on Friday, October 10, 2003
When Atticus shot that mad dog, Jem and Scout finally learned that he used to be the deadest shot in Maycomb. Why do you think Atticus didn't tell them this before? Do you think Atticus once being the deadest shot in Maycomb will affect the story later? Also, on pg. 98 Miss Maudie said, "People in their right minds never take pride of their talents." What does she mean by that? Don't you take pride in your talents?
I think Atticus didn't tell his kids about his talent because he wasn't proud of it. He thinks being a dead shot is a bad thing. Atticus once being a dead shot will probably affect the story in some trivial way, but I can't see how it would affect it in a big way. I thought miss Maudie's quote was strange because people are always boasting and being proud of their talents. Maybe she meant some talents you could not be proud of in a right mind.

Journal Entry 23 by Andrewmck from Albuquerque, New Mexico USA on Friday, October 10, 2003
that was strange with all the stuff in the tree and i'm pretty sure it was boo radley too. I also think that Mr. radley i trying to hide somthing. I mean the tree is perfectly fine he had to have known that someone was putting stuff in the tree.
in Mss. Muadie's fire i think that someone else started it.
that dog may have been mad but if he wasn't then i feel sorry for the dog.
who wo7uld have known that Atticus was so good at shooting a gun.

Journal Entry 24 by Andrewmck from Albuquerque, New Mexico USA on Friday, October 10, 2003
i would have to agree with you jacob, it really seemed like Atticus was not pround of him being able to shoot that well. i think that Atticus shootting really well will affect the book alot. he might have to shoot sombody and everything wiuld change.
iu think Mss maudie means that you should not boost about talents that are bad and that involve killing.

Journal Entry 25 by alex13 from Albuquerque, New Mexico USA on Friday, October 10, 2003
yeah Andrew that was weird thatmr. radley did that to the tree maybe he just dosnt want people to me with Boo.

Jacob I do think that Atticuss dead shot will come in later maybe he will shoot at someone

Journal Entry 26 by jacobstephanz from Albuquerque, New Mexico USA on Friday, October 10, 2003
That was strange! I bet it was Boo too. I think he wants to be friends with them. I think Mr. Radley filled the tree in because he's ashamed of boo for something and he doesn't want him to come into contact with people.
I think Miss Maudie's house burning down was an accident, because I can't imagine anyone burning down her house on purpose.
I do think the dog was mad because it acted like it; anyways they did a good job of not taking any chance.

Journal Entry 27 by jacobstephanz from Albuquerque, New Mexico USA on Friday, October 10, 2003
Wow! What a great website. Did you know Alabama was once owned by the Britsh? I never did.

Journal Entry 28 by Andrewmck from Albuquerque, New Mexico USA on Friday, October 17, 2003
why do think that aunt alexandra came to live with Aticcus?
what kind of picture came in your head when lula was mad at scout and jem at church?

how would you have felt if you were dill

Journal Entry 29 by wingAnonymousFinderwing on Friday, October 17, 2003
That was crazy that Jem cut the top of mrs. duboses flowers. Its pretty cool how he still reads to her even though she died. Its weird that on weekdays they use the black church as a gambling place.

I think its brave of Jem to cut her flowers but i would of done it too! Mrs. Dubose is mean. But I also think she was a little nicer inside or why would Jem still read to her? And if somebody used my church as a gamleing place I would be so mad.

Journal Entry 30 by Andrewmck from Albuquerque, New Mexico USA on Friday, October 17, 2003
i think aunt alexandra came bevause she thought that scout needed more feniman influance

lula looked tall big and buff at first with sort of a read face and a flowery dress. then as it went on she sort of shrunk and became skinny but her face was still red.

personally i would be scared and starving. i would want to hid under the bed again. and i would almost trow up because i hate peas and i can only eat a certian amount ofcorn bread befor i feal like i am going to throw up.

Journal Entry 31 by wingAnonymousFinderwing on Friday, October 17, 2003
Andrew I think that Aunt Alexandra came to live with them for the children or she came to save the family name.

Journal Entry 32 by Andrewmck from Albuquerque, New Mexico USA on Friday, October 17, 2003
i would hate it if my church was used as a gambling thing. i would want to do somthing.

it was brave of jem to cut the bushes down but it was still wrong. if i would have done that right after it i would run far away and not come back tell a week later. of corse i would leave a note.

Journal Entry 33 by jacobstephanz from Albuquerque, New Mexico USA on Friday, October 17, 2003
Look on page 112 where Atticus explains Mrs. Dubose to Jem. Isn't it great how Atticus said, "I wanted you to see something about her-I wanted you to see what real courage is, instead of getting the idea that courage is a man with a gun in his hand. It's when you know you're licked before you begin but you begin anyway and you see it through no matter what." He saad that about her even tough sh called him all those nasty things. Do you think he was right to say that? Do you think Mrs. Dubose is courageous?

Journal Entry 34 by jacobstephanz from Albuquerque, New Mexico USA on Friday, October 17, 2003
I think Atticus is right to sa that, because she had a disease she knew she would die from, yet she fought it anyway. I think she is a very courageous person. Also, for the author to think of that response from Atticus is amazing.

Journal Entry 35 by jacobstephanz from Albuquerque, New Mexico USA on Friday, October 17, 2003
I also think Aunt Alexandra came because she thinks Scout needs someone to be like her mom. I also think Aunt Alexandra thinks that Atticus is doing a poor job of parenting.
I pictured a big black woman who was mad at something else but took it out on them.
If I was Dill I would be happy to see my friends even though I was starving and cramped.

Journal Entry 36 by jacobstephanz from Albuquerque, New Mexico USA on Friday, October 17, 2003
I think Jem should of kept his temper and just understood it was just a silly, old lady; that would be extremely hard, though. From Atticus's explanation of Mrs. Dubose, I think it was a good idea for Jem to read to her.
A church should never be used as a place to gamble. That is WRONG!!! The black people in the town should try and do something about that.

Journal Entry 37 by Andrewmck from Albuquerque, New Mexico USA on Friday, October 24, 2003
what do you think is mr. cunninahams blid spot is.

why do you think everybody is going to the court house to see people get prosacuted.

Journal Entry 38 by jacobstephanz from Albuquerque, New Mexico USA on Friday, October 24, 2003
In Tom Robinson's trial they gave him the death penalty. I wondered what you had to do today to get the death penalty, so I found the website: http://www.deathpenaltyinfo.org/article.php?did=144&scid=10. Did you know Florida gives the death penalty for capital drug trafficking?
The site gave all the states reasons for the death penalty, and if you're going to kill someone I guess most of those reasons give some justification. However, I don't believe drug trafficking is a crime punishable by death.

Journal Entry 39 by wingAnonymousFinderwing on Friday, October 24, 2003
WHAT DO YOU THINK ABOUT MR. CUNNINGHAM?

I THINK HE IS A GOOD MAN BUT IF HE IS TRYING TO HURT ATTICUS , NOT A GOOD FRIEND.

Journal Entry 40 by wingAnonymousFinderwing on Friday, October 24, 2003
ANDREW I THINK THAT EVERYONE IS GOING TO COURT BECAUSE THEY DONT WANT THE GUY ATTICUS IS DEFENDING TO WIN.

Journal Entry 41 by wingAnonymousFinderwing on Friday, October 24, 2003
THAT WAS A GREAT SITE MAYBE WHY NEW MEXICO IS THE MOST CRIMES IS BECAUSE WE'RE NOT STRICT ENOUGH .

Journal Entry 42 by jacobstephanz from Albuquerque, New Mexico USA on Friday, October 24, 2003
I think Mr. Cunnigham's blind spot is he is swayed too easily by other people, figureatively speaking. He probably could be a good friend if he thought for himself.

Journal Entry 43 by Andrewmck from Albuquerque, New Mexico USA on Friday, October 24, 2003
jacob georga has a lot of death penalty and new mexico only has one wakco.

i think Mr.cunnigham is hard on the outside but good on the inside

Journal Entry 44 by Andrewmck from Albuquerque, New Mexico USA on Friday, October 24, 2003
his blind spot is that he can't see that black people are equal to everybody

because nothing this exciting has happened in a long time

Journal Entry 45 by jacobstephanz from Albuquerque, New Mexico USA on Friday, October 24, 2003
Everybody is going to court because they know this is going to be a good case; they know this because a great lawyer (Atticus) is defending a black man. They want to see what happens because black man usually are convicted, but with a great lawyer maybe not.
