Why does Melinda seem so careless at school?
Melinda has lost some self-confidence because she has lost so many friends who went a different path in High School because she called the cops who busted up the party.
Why do other fresman girls hate Melinda?
She called the cops and got several of the girls older brother's in trouble.
What should Melinda do about this hatred she is receiving from old friends.
She should just be nice to her old friends and try to make new friends like her new friend Heather.

Here are my questions. Why is heather such a control freak? Why is melinda so quiet and why can't she just say how she feels? What happeneed at the party?

Melinda is so careless beacause she lost all of her frineds and she doesn't think she has to do anything for people to like her. Even though inside she really wants people to like her but she just won't try. There are a couple reasons why these girls hate her. 1} She ruined the party and got the girls brothers in truoble. 2} she doesn't belong to a group ans she doesn't have any frineds except heather and even heather isn't even her friend.
Heather was probably raised to be a perfectionist.
Melinda is hurt so she might have a personality where she doesn't express how she feels when she's been hurt.
At the party things probably got aou of hand so Melinda did what was right even though she was standing alone.

Melinda does not want to tell people about what happened at the party because she's afraid if she tells someone she'll not only get in trouble but she will have to face her parents, friends(Rachel), and teachers.

I think Melinda is scared because of the incident last summer, so she is trying to play dumb, whenshe allows them to tell her off.

Why won't Melinda just do her homework. I mean she is a smart kid. I just don't understand her. Sure i know i haven't turned in my homework a couple of times but i'm not flunking!
why won't melinda join the Martha's? Melinda needs to join a club. Since heather is her friend she should join the club. Mel is artistic and creative and she needs more friends anyway. I know she doesn't want to dress like that but she should change a little!

Laurie Halse Anderson has wrote many other books, but I'm not sure if she's gotten awards for them.
Anderson mostly writes for teens, but one of her books is for adults. Overall Iam very impressed with the book Speak she has written. She is very detailed and powerful with the words she used.

I think Melinda is has other issues that she thinks other things are more inportant than hw.

Well, one of the reasons I think Melinda does not do her homework is because maybe she just doesn't care. I think she feels that her life is over because, of the way her friends treat her, and because of what happened at the party.
I think you have a good idea why Melinda won't join the Martha's Club. Your right she needs to do another activity to get her mind of things. Heather can be a little stange at parts of the book, but otherwise she seems determined to help Melinda to do something.

You Know, sometimes Heather really annoys me. She is always all over Melinda, begging her to do stuff for her. Why can't Heather try be more confident? She thinks if she goes down one more level, everyone will hate her. I also wonder why Melinda won't tell everyone what happened. If she is so scared, wouldn't be more scary to hide in the dark. And even if you didn't tell anyone, you would be living a big fat lie!! Why won't she talk to her parents?! Family is almost the best people to talk to!

Why can't she have a regular Thanksgiving dinner? Its not that hard to fix and turkey and stuffing. I mean c'mon! Part of the reason why melinda is so messed up is because her mom is always gone and her dad is usually on the couch watching t.v or out in the garage. What she really needs is family don't you agree? Every time she sees her parents they yell at her for having bad grades and stuff. They need to show they care and that the love her. She is very low in confidence and what she needs is some self esteem, And her parents don't help at all! She is also very good at art and it was no surprise she had an A in that class. I think she is so good because she has all these feelings inside becuse she doesn't SPEAK. When she does art she expresses what she feels inside and art is very good for her do you agree? She is a very smart kid and she needs to stop skipping school. I mean her GPA is a 1.7! Just because she has no friends she needs to get education, do you know what i mean? But at least she starts to do her homework but then she starts to go into her closet room and she gets bad grades again, but she still has a good grade in Art!

Heather probably needs Melinda more than Melinda needs Heather. Melinda needs confidence to let it all out. She feels that her parents won't love her for this secret she shouldn't keep.

Melinda's parents need to get her to speak. Andy makes Melinda feel very vulnerable. Melinda doesn't quite understand how to express herself through art.
You are right heathfeather22, she needs some time to not only figure out herself but her whole life. If they would just sit down and talk to her seriously, they might get her out of something, that should've never happened.

I'm surprised Melinda wrote to Rachelle about Andy Evans. When Melinda is building a relationship up with David Petrakis, she seemed intimidated. Also Ivy seems to be a possible friend for Melinda.

I didn't expect Rachelle to believe Melinda about what happened with Andy Evans and Melinda. It was also interesting that Melinda's life actually started to get better. I thought it was dramatic that Melinda finally spoke to save a old friend.
I thought Rachelle was going to blow by Melinda and careles about Melinda's feelings instead she listened. Melinda's life was getting better because she spoke and had no fear to step up when she was needed. It seemed like Melinda got courage and decided to let go of her secret and be brae for a good cause. She became herself again and helped others with telling about her secret.

It was nice that Rachelle finally understood and Melinda actually spoke. She could have spoke earlier and then she could have had a better year. I think she felt like Mr. Freeman was a person who could coop with Melinda.
I think Rachelle still does not see Melinda as a true friend after what happened at the party. Rachelle, needs to sit down with Melinda and just talk privately about what happened. That what i thought was going to happen too. So i think your right. It was really nice to tell Rachelle about Andy Evans because rachelle was mean to her and melinda still tried to be a nice friend and tell her because to tell the truth if one of my old friends were being mean to me i wouldn't tell them about that. But i really liked this book and i think there should be a sequal and hopefully Laurie Halse Anderson will do that. I would recommend this book to anyone because it makes you feel as if you went through every thing melinda went threw.
