Another 1001 book acquired after some judicious poking around in second hand book stores near my house. Will read and release soon.

Excellent - the best Coetzee I've read so far. Haunting, well written, stark and painful. Also see my slightly more verbose goodreads.com review here

Very good indeed!! The author writes from the perspective of a man with learning disabilities during a civil war in South Africa. The narrative emulates the protagonists thinking and reasoning very well indeed, it also looks at how the character might become swept up in other people's judgements and how easy it is for the vulnerable to become victims themselves.

This book is an excellent exploration of what it might mean for such a character at a time when the fabric of civilised society starts to fragment and what obstacles may stand in the way of him getting to his 'safe place'.
