So you've just picked up this book, and you look up this entry, and you find it's a tie-in to a cult 1990s television series. And you're thinking 'Oh, God, what could be worse?'

Give it a break, already. If you've not come across Northern Exposure before, be warned that you are now in serious danger of becoming a fan. They sell videos, you know. Here's a link to a fan site:

Or it might be that you already know about Northern Exposure, in which case you will be cheering.

See that bit where it says 'Cicely is a state of mind'. That's awfully true, and it might soon be your state of mind. Cicely is this little fictional town on the Alaskan Riviera which for some reason attracts every screaming misfit on the continent of North America. They're stuck up there with the moose hunters, the lumberjacks, the pick-up drivers and the Midnight Sun. And they just have to get along. It's great telly.

But it may also be important to mention that this is a great book. It's an epistolary novel (that's letters to you, pal) dealing with an episode in Cicely's history where the inhabitants stop being able to sleep. The young, newly-qualified Dr Joel Fleischman, late of New York City, must treat this phenomenon. Only Joel hates Alaska like poison. He's stuck there because the state paid his medical school fees, and now they want their pound of flesh...

Conflict. The basis for good narrative. I should also point out that I would never be giving this book away if our household didn't contain two copies...

Release planned for Sunday, September 28, 2003 at Randomly between Land's End and Falmouth in South West Coast Path, Cornwall, England United Kingdom.

Realistically, this will be found by another walker. We'll be looking for somewhere safe but visible on the Coast Path itself - the book will be wrapped in plastic to protect it... Think of it as you would Letterboxing... If you find it, do please make a journal entry and let us know.

This is where the book was released... Up on Carn-du, just above Lamorna Cove, heading in the direction of Mounts Bay.

We saw a lot of young members of an Outward Bound group heading the other way. Definitely too young to remember Northern Exposure. And probably with a lot of do-gooding adults to convince them that Bookcrossing! was really the haunt of hundreds of evil paedophiles, and it was all a plot. Oh well.
