"Nothing links person to person like the frequent passage from hand to hand of a good book."

This is my favorite book by Neal Stephenson, along with Zodiac. Hiro Protagonist is one of the all time great characters, living his life in "real life" and also being a warrior prince in the "Metaverse". The story takes place in a future America, but possibly not so far in the future. A really fun story.

A wandering book -- the karma of literature!

I'm claiming this softcover from the Bookbox with Legs (see its bookbox journal here).

The novel opens with a darkly hilarious chapter setting the scene - a high-tech world where the protagonist... delivers pizza, in an over-powered vehicle (its batteries have enough power to "fire a pound of bacon into the Asteroid Belt") and wielding samurai swords to keep the customers and any troublesome passers-by respectful. And it gets wackier from there, with adventures in the Metaverse, a virtual-reality world (a common concept now, not so much so when this book was written). I have to say that I didn't fall in love with the book, much as I wanted to, but it had some really delightful bits, and I can see why it's appreciated by so many.

[There's a TV Tropes page on the novel, with some entertaining tidbits.
