Complex, rambling gothic tale, like ‘Shadow of the Wind’ marinaded in the atmosphere of Barcelona – this time during the period between two world wars.

The story of David, a young man with humble background and a talent for writing who is paid a huge sum by a mysterious ‘publisher’ to produce a work that creates a new religion. In accepting the deal he is drawn into a dangerous web of mystery and intrigue with supernatural overtones.

Written as David’s memoir, the story does meander around and has a dream like quality that sometimes makes it hard to determine what is real and what may be in David’s mind. On his journey he meets some very memorable characters and brilliantly described locations including some, like the Cemetery of Lost Books and the Sempere bookshop that connect this story to The Shadow of the Wind.

A historical, supernatural thriller and romance that is imbued with the author’s passion for books and their importance for human kind. Enjoyable but maybe not quite as wonderful as the earlier book.
