On the eve of the US entry into World War II, there was a sudden rush to the altar, as the young men and women of the “Greatest Generation” suddenly felt the urge to get married. How these young couples coped with the war and the long term impact it had on their lives is the focus of this absorbing novel. Covering two decades through the middle of the last century, we follow the lives of three women and their families as they struggle through the uncertainty of the war and then try to live normal lives afterwards.

Each of these women brings a distinct personality to the story, and the alternating points of view allows us to explore the impact of the same events from a number of angles. At times, the story is brutally honest in confronting the trauma inflicted on both the men and the women by the war, and it drives home the reality of how long the damage could linger...even to the point of being passed on to the next generation. Each of the characters here copes with their grief differently, and the responses all feel authentic, even when they are clearly unhealthy.

On top of all of the emotional baggage, we also explore some of the social issues of this period, including the beginnings of the civil rights movement and the rise of the women’s liberation movement. Even as people struggle to return to the life they used to know, it is clear that the experiences of the war have awakened new ideals, and that the world will never be the same again.

An excellent story that is difficult to put down, and which shines a bright light on the wide spread and deep impact the Second World War had both on individuals and on our society.

I started this book, but then I decided not to read it after all. I've had it for so long now that I think it would be best for me to let this book travel,
