I was originally drawn to this book because I've studied paleontology which I both love and loath and there are not that many novels about women in early science.

I really enjoyed reading this story, which was made all the better when I found out that it is based on real people, Mary Anning is amazing. I loved the descriptions of life during the period and the somewhat precarious position of women, even of those from well to do backgrounds such as the Philpots, during the period. It's amazing to think that Mary did what she did and received the recognition she did with the disadvantages that being a woman and from the working class were at that time.

A few days after I finished this novel I actually visited the Museum of Natural History in Berlin and actually saw an ichthyosaur fossil that had come from Lyme Regis, it was incredibly exciting moment for me.

I'm really looking forward to reading this - Mary Anning is a personal hero of mine (like you said, there are not a lot of women in the history of science). I'm hoping to finish my current bookring book today or tomorrow so I can get onto this quick sharp

Popped in the post for the next reader

I'm not sure what's happening but lately some of my JE's tend to disappear... This book has arrived about three weeks ago, I'm not sure. I'm sorry I didn't notice the JE had gone missing earlier but I've been on vacation :/ In the meanwhile I took the book with me and finished reading (I couldn't stop!). It's a great story with strong and likeable characters that reignited my interest in fossils. You have to admire both Elizabeth Philpot and Mary Anning - I was taken aback by how much of the book is real!

Funny thing, last week I went to a beach, and after noticing the cliffs were mostly limstone, inspired by the novel, I wondered if by any chance there were any fossils there... And I found lots of ammonites!
