I ordered the first few volumes of this series after reading its TV Tropes page (which does contain spoilers, most masked but some not, so be warned); it sounds like a truly horrifying story about an elementary school full of kids that gets transported somehow to a deadly and barren wasteland... And while I wasn't familiar with the author's work, I've seen quite a few references to his landmark status as a horror manga artist including an entire storyline in Kingyo Used Books Vol. 3.

Later: Oh, man! This is... seriously insane, warped, twisted, dark... Yeesh!

It opens benignly enough; narrator Sho describes a fight he had with his mother before school, a heated argument that left both of them upset. Then Sho heads off to school, almost turns back when he realizes he's forgotten his lunch money, but stays instead - and joins the rest of the children and staff in the school buildings when the unthinkable happens: the entire building complex vanishes from its location in the town, leaving a crumbling hole in the earth, and appears... somewhere/when else, surrounded by barren wasteland!

We get to see the reactions of people on both sides of the event, with clear panic on most faces and with growing hysteria ensuing inside the school buildings. And there's almost immediate tragedy, as one of the panicked students falls from the roof - but that's nothing to what's in store.

At first the story focuses on the steps taken by some of the staff to try and maintain order and find out what happened, but the sheer impossibility of the situation - not to mention the numbers of very young children who are all in a state of near-hysteria - makes that very difficult. And even our young hero Sho isn't all that heroic; he's more active than some, but he's also short-tempered, easily annoyed by being clung to by more helpless kids.

Another tragedy convinces the students and teachers that it's fatal to leave the school grounds, so it seems that they're trapped - and that leads to the question of how these hundreds of people can be fed now, and what lengths some people will go to to survive...

The end material includes a bio of the author, plus a bibliography.

[There are a couple of live-action film adaptations, from 1987 and 1995; neither of them have rave reviews, though I admit I'd be curious to see them anyway!]
