Amelie, a well-intentioned and eager young westerner, goes to Japan to spend a year working at the Yumimoto Corporation. Returning to the land where she was born is the fulfilment of a dream for Amelie, but working there turns into a comic nightmare of terror and self-abasement. Disturbing, hilarious and totally convincing Fear and Trembling displays an elegant and shrewd understanding of the intricate ways Japanese relationships are made and spoiled.
A short and interesting book. Reading it, you are never sure if it is real or fiction but from what I know about Japanese corporate culture it may be so. Well worth its inclusion in the 1001 books.

I enjoyed this little book and agree with davemurray101, that it often feels more like a true story than a novel. Interesting to read of the ways of other cultures.

I love to read about different cultures and this one was a really quick to read. The book was at the same time a bit terrifying and funny. Really interesting little book.

It's still early for my birthday but I had to open my gifts now due to unexpected circumstances. Thank you slipperbunny, for the wishlist book, I'm sure I'll enjoy it! :D
I definitely enjoyed this book. Her story and her writing make this little book really funny, even when the circumstances are not funny at all. I'm not sure I could have made it 'til the end of the year working at that company!
