War for the Oaks: A Novel

This book is reserved for TobysRus, who organized a heckuva great UnConvention in Boston last year, and was also personally very kind to me and my slow walking. I was going to bring this to BCinDC anyway, because we like to showcase our local Minnesota authors, so when I saw it on Toby's wishlist I knew it was the perfect thank-you.
I've always liked this book, all if it, but the part that stays with me best is the description on page 139 of the bike ride along Minnehaha Creek: water at the heart of my city, and the image of the Falls moving like a child admiring its shadow. This is our neighborhood. We live six blocks south of the Creek, and love to visit the Falls for a summer lunch. Someday maybe we can have the pleasure of showing you in person!

Given to TobysRUs for the great time we had at the Boston UnConvention
A RABCK from my wishlist! Thank you JudySlump612! So nice seeing you again at the 2011 Bookcrossing Convention in Washington DC! Many, many thanks for your friendship! I didn't get to spend as much time with you and DrSlump612 in Washington, but I know our paths will continue to cross at future BC conventions. The book looks terrific and I am looking forward to reading it!
This book was among the generous boxes-o-books that BCer tobysrus brought me on this very hot day, as part of her downsizing/decluttering efforts. (Waves to the previous journalers!)
I enjoyed Bull's novel Territory, and while this one has a very different setting it sounds quite intriguing.
Later: The book opens with a delightful little chapter "on the folly of introductions" - yes, it is itself an introduction of sorts, but includes the author's preferences about when or if to read introductions in other books; it doesn't have any spoilers for THIS book, so feel free to read it first if you want to!
The story proper is an entertaining tale of a rocker chick who's just been dumped by her boyfriend - and has lost her band ("InKline Plain, the most misspelled band in Minneapolis") as well. Then she meets a roguish phouka and finds herself caught up in a war between different factions of the fey, with music and friendships and potential romance in the mix as well. While I was never into the bars-and-bands scene myself, I enjoyed the whole cameraderie/power-of-music part of the story, as well as the developing relationships.
[There's a short TV Tropes page on the novel, with some entertaining tidbits.]

I'm adding this book to the Otherworldly bookbox, which will be on its way to its next stop shortly. Hope it travels safely, and that people enjoy the selection!

I picked this book out of emmejo's Otherworldly Bookbox (Sci-fi, Fantasy, Horror). How exciting to find this book in the box. I have had this on my expanded Wishlist for several years. Thanks for sharing!
