'Fear and Trembling' is a fictionalised memoir of a year spent working for a huge corporation in Japan. Amelie's attempts to come to terms with the vast cultural differences in both working friendships and business etiquette provide some drily cringeworthy scenarios. We watch the inevitable misunderstandings and the horrifying snowball effect unfolding on Amelie's prospective career, told with Nothomb's trademark wry sense of humour.

Although the synopsis of this book did not initially appeal to me, this turned out to be a book I thoroughly enjoyed reading. Once again, Nothomb proves that less can indeed be more.
