E. M. Forster, read by Emma Thompson - sounds good already. Thanks, bookstogive!
Abridged versions of books: Grr! Argh!
E. M. Forster: NMCOT (Not My Cup Or Tea)
Emma Thompson: Priceless - almost makes up for the rest.
I'm at a loss to explain why I don't like Forster, since I'm a mad Anglophile. Maybe he's one of the very rare authors whose work gains from being turned into film. This is certainly true of the beautiful David Lean adaptation of 'Passage To India,' and the 'Room with a View' with Judi Dench and Maggie Smith. So maybe I should keep an open mind on 'Howards End' until I can see the Merchant-Ivory production.
But the part that always throws me off is why Henry Wilcox proposes to Margaret Schlegel, and WHY IN THE WORLD she accepts him. And as much as I'd like to blame this on the abridgement, that wouldn't be fair. In the full text, the engagement comes with just as little preparation or explanation. Henry Wilcox is so completely pompous and self-righteous he reminds me of Mr. Collins from 'Pride and Prejudice.' But Margaret is not Charlotte Lucas! Her family is independently wealthy, and she seems to be enjoying a life full of books, concerts, and friends. Why she would give this up for marriage to someone who never listens to her or understands her values is just plain beyond me.
And yet... Emma Thompson brings an almost magical dimension to this performance. I love watching her act on screen, and I'd never wish for her to quit that career. But if sometime she gets tired of all the early morning makeup calls, I hope she'll consider taking up recording audiobooks.
But that's just one person's opinion. Future listeners, what do YOU think of this book?

Am putting this into a cassette-only audiobookbox.... Hope this finds a good home!
I probably would have enjoyed this better if I wasn't listening to it in my truck while driving back and forth to work, and it took me a long time to get through it.
it was a little bit too "Gatsby-ish" for me - you know, another one of those "woe is me" singing the blues of the idle rich brats.....
will be released soon.....
