Although I've not yet read any of the Railway Detective mysteries, I was very impressed with The Frost Fair by this author, so have started to collect books in this series as well. I was delighted to find this one, which I believe is the second, in a discount bookshop in Ripon this morning.
Amazon Editorial Review: "London, 1852. On the shocking discovery of a passenger's body on the Great Western Railway excursion train, Detective Inspector Robert Colbeck and his assistant, Sergeant Victor Leeming, are dispatched to the scene. Faced with what initially appears to be a motiveless murder, Colbeck is intrigued by the murder weapon - a noose. When it emerges that the victim had worked as a public executioner, Colbeck realizes that this must be intrinsically linked to the killer's choice of weapon. However, the further he delves into the case, the more mysterious it becomes. When a second man is strangled with a noose on the train, Colbeck knows that he must act quickly; can he catch the murderer before more lives are lost? The memorable characters, first featured in The Railway Detective, again lead you down unexpected paths in their quest to solve the mystery of the noose murders."

A fan misses the the prize-fight he's travelled to see; he doesn't get off the excursion train from Paddington; he's been garotted! And what's the connection with the prison chaplain found murdered on a train in Kent?
This second in the Railway Detective mysteries is great fun, confirming this is as a series and an author I want to read more of!

CONTROLLED RELEASE NOTES:
Flying across the Channel to greet bluenoser in France: Happy Easter, lass :-)
Our postlady staggered up to our front door this morning with a wonderful parcel of books (and pretty Easter card) from Nu-Knees. This is the second package of books I've received from her in10 days; she must think I'm in dire need of lots of reading material :o)
Thank you so much Nu-Knees - they all look yummy.

This is the second in the series that I've read, and the characters are growing on me. A nice easy read about 'the railway detective', based in the Victorian era, which isn't usually a favourite time in history for me - I usually prefer the older stuff. Plenty of twists near the end to keep the reader guessing why and who dunnit!
Thank you Nu-Knees.
Thank you Nu-Knees.
I found this on a couple of wish lists and it's heading off this morning, to apapsa in Athens.
I just received the book! Thank you very much bluenoser, I will do my best to read it as soon as possible and I will send it to another bookcrosser or release it in the wild afterwards. Best wishes from Greece! (Lovely postcards by the way :o) )
