A good book. Modern in theme and content and with realistic dialogue and characters, but with too much of a reliance on coincidence to make it truly believable. If you like your books full on angst and life-in-2003-woes, this is the one for you.

Released on Monday, September 08, 2003 at Bush House, London WC1 in London - City, England United Kingdom.

Somewhere in Covent Garden, at lunchtime (1200-1300B). Happy hunting.

I found 'Dead Air' on a window-sill in Bush House, London home of the BBC World Service. I'm a broadcaster, like the central character, so it seemed the ideal novel to immerse myself in while on train and plane journeys (I finished almost a two weeks later on a flight home from Athens).

It actually did something quite important for me, as I've been through a long phase of feeling I'm too busy to make a commitment to any book, contenting myself with endless newspapers instead. Having got back into the reading habit I hope I won't stop!

As for the book itself, it's a perfectly adequate little adventure yarn, but to be honest what action there is comes all at the end, and you have to wade through quite a lot of pompous pseudo-philosophy to get there. (This stuff is meant to be the main character being opinionated and gobby but gets to feel like it's Iain Banks himself injecting his own outpourings). And there are some truly cringe-making clever-clever lines ('the human race is so apologetic, maybe we should change our name to Homo Sorry Sapiens by misdeed poll').

All that said, I couldn't help liking 'Dead Air' - and being grateful to it and BookCrossing for getting me back into Proper Reading.

I plan to leave it on a train in the next few days (probably Sept 22nd) and would love to hear about its future advntures!
