Quite an entertaining read. You can almost hear the voice of Lucy Marsden, the 99-year-old widow of a Civil War veteran, as she recalls the details of her life, and the war stories that her husband shared with her. Lucy is quite a character- still sharp minded and very witty.
There are some really great lines in this book, like this one, when Lucy describes a group of veterans sharing war stories:
"Seemed every soldier telling in the town square believed the war'd been a wide bell- and he hisself the sounding clapper that'd given it all sound and meaning."
This book will be in the mail tomorrow to another bookcrosser.

I received this book today and look forward to reading it. Thanks Pashmack!
This is a very well-written but long, almost 900 pages, novel about a 13-year-old who fights in the Civil War, the 15 year old girl he wed when he was almost 50 and his former slave. The novel weaves in the history of other townfolk and the injuries suffered by the veteran and those he wroughts on his wife and family.
