A beautifully told story comprising two parts which was to be one of a series of
novels. Very poignant as the novel was written at the time of the events depicted and as we now know the author was taken to a concentration camp and died soon after
her arrest . The first part titled 'A Storm in June' chronicles the mass
exodus of citizens from Paris following the German invasion. We follow several
groups of characters and their perspectives of both the poor and wealthy and
how they deal with their circumstances. I especially liked the chapter from
the perspective of the family cat which provided some comic relief. I
preferred the second part titled 'Dolce' which is set in a small town occupied
by Germans during the war where the native French have no choice but to
accept these men into their homes and how they tolerate this imposition.
Chosen for my f2f book group and was enjoyed by all and generated lively discussion. I have 'All Our Worldly Goods' by Nemirovsky on my tbr so looking forward to reading more
from this author.
