My son had a hard time getting into this but maybe it was too old for him (he's 13)
Amazon Editorial Review
Marcus, a.k.a “w1n5t0n,” is only seventeen years old, but he figures he already knows how the system works–and how to work the system. Smart, fast, and wise to the ways of the networked world, he has no trouble outwitting his high school’s intrusive but clumsy surveillance systems.
But his whole world changes when he and his friends find themselves caught in the aftermath of a major terrorist attack on San Francisco. In the wrong place at the wrong time, Marcus and his crew are apprehended by the Department of Homeland Security and whisked away to a secret prison where they’re mercilessly interrogated for days.
When the DHS finally releases them, Marcus discovers that his city has become a police state where every citizen is treated like a potential terrorist. He knows that no one will believe his story, which leaves him only one option: to take down the DHS himself.

CONTROLLED RELEASE NOTES:
Sent to mathgirl40 for the YA VBB.
I selected this book from Minerva101's YA VBB. I've heard a lot of good things about Cory Doctorow's writing, and I'm really looking forward to reading this! Thanks, kally93!
I really enjoyed this exciting, fast-paced story. As a software developer myself, I found it interesting to see how Doctorow works his opinions on security, privacy and the Internet into the story. I also wonder if his descriptions of how cryptography works will get teens more interested in mathematics.
I've put this into Erishkigal's Science Fiction bookbox.
My son expressed interest in this one and since I also enjoy YA we picked this one out of the box. Thank you kally93 :)
Most excellent! My son and I enjoyed this one and I actually picked up a copy for our PC. I am going to add this one back into the YA VBB because it needs to be shared.
This book never got chosen out of my VBB and I just realized it has lingered on my bookshelf for a while, so I took it to the Calgary Bookcrossing meeting today to find a new reader
Picked up this book at the Calgary BookCrossing March meet-up. Another sci-fi recommendation from Minvera101.
I thought the book would be set further in the future, but the fact that it's near future makes it more interesting to read. Something like this could easily happen these days. I also loved that the Xbox played a pivotal role in Marcus' hacker network.

WILD RELEASE NOTES:
Releasing this book at the Calgary BookCrossing April meet-up. If it didn't go home with someone, it's on the bookshelf.
Picked this up at April's meeting. Once again I came home with way too many books! This one has been added to the very large to be read mountain...
I want to read this one but as it has names on it, I am bringing it to the group so that other's can read it.
I do want it back at some point.

Picked up today by proxy from the Calgary Bookcrossing meeting. In my attempt to convince BookyMcBooks to read it first, I ended up googling Cory Doctorow, then post scarcity economics which led to me forgetting to journal this book (but I'm back now!)
Looking forward to the read. (I couldn't convince him to read it first.)

I had a hard time getting into this book. Part of it was because the main character was a bit of an arrogant 16 (or was it 17? I forget already) year-old boy - the kind of boy I both resented and admired for both being way smarter than me, and way more confident than me at that age.
When I finally got into it (thank you library audiobook playing while I do overtime work at home) it got to be a bit too powerful for my comfort. It made me question my opinions of security and privacy, and the whole definition of freedom in an internet-obsessed world.
I guess it did it's job.
Will be brought back to Calgary Bookcrossing next month for a new reader to enjoy.
