Ian McEwan stands as one of my favourite novelists - so good at evoking the right atmosphere with every book he writes. Strangely, this is not one of my favourites but still so far above other contenders....I commend it to the world. Please enjoy.

I found this book at Cafe C, stacked up by the newspapers in the window. I'd seen it on the go-hunting page a few days ago and thought I'd see if it was still there. (BTW, the A.S. Byatt book was also there but I left it behind for another reader).
I have previously read Ian NcEwan's Atonement, which I thought was superb. This looks very different but well worth reading. I will read it and then decide on the next stage of its journey.

This is the second Ian McEwan book that I have read and I really enjoyed it. It took me a chapter or so to get into the swing of things but it wasn't too long before I felt enmeshed with the characters and setting. It's set during the construction of the Berlin Tunnel shortly after the second world war. It's both a spy novel and a novel about people and relationships.
I have passed this on to my boyfriend's father, John. He has promised to register and release.
