For me, this book and 'Notes from a Small Island' are Bryson at his best. Travelling around a country, often in the less explored and sometimes less salubrious areas, and recording the minutiae of daily life. His observations, and those of the people he meets are so detailed that you could be forgiven for believing that he is simply reminding you of a visit you'd already made to the place.

And yes, I know there are two copies of this on my shelf. That's what you get when you put books in boxes.

What a pleasant surprise this was, thanks so much netstation. I found this book tucked into a parcel containing my bookcrossing stamp and a lovely hardback edition of Atwood's Booker prize winning 'The Blind Assasin'. A very generous bookcrosser you are.

I adore reading Bryson especially when on holiday myself. His air of confusement and dry witty delivery have me hooked from the outset.

I took this book with me to Australia on my holiday home over Christmas. It's been just over 3 years since I made a very similar road trip across the States myself and visited most of the same small towns and tourist cities as the author did. Doubly exciting was the idea that just like Bryson, I'm in the midst of a homecoming myself.
Re-engaging with smalltown Australia for the first time in four years. I thoroughly enjoyed this trip back round the States and I hope whoever finds it next does also.
