Sometimes when you read the first page of a book, you just know you're going to enjoy it. I knew this one was going to be a good one when I read this fabulously well-turned sentence:
Isn't that great? Just how many layers of meaning is it possible to squeeze into one little sentence?
The rest of the book didn't disappoint, either. A historian searches for the identity of a woman found buried in her garden, and as she discovers her fascinating (and often horrifying) history, finds herself as well.

Heart spasming, I reached down into the bed of clay to cover what was left of her hand with my right, my writing, hand; and she gripped me.

What a great book! Thank you for sending this my way, FutureCat. As soon as I finished, I went straight out to the library to find another book by this author - thankfully she has written plenty! The storyline in this book was quite interesting - I'm not sure I ever quite understood the relationship between Olivia and her mother, but I certainly enjoyed the historical parts. The real pleasure of the book was the writing, though.
Handed to my soon-to-be sister-in-law (*drums fingers on desk and looks meaningfully at brother*), to read on the plane back to the UK.
