In the acknowledgements, Kidman says "I set out to construct a book that had an entity, with a loose narrative thread, rather than an unrelated ragbag of articles." Unfortunately, she acheived the exact opposite of her intention - this book is a muddled collection of articles on seemingly random topics, the quality of which varies wildly. There are a few gems, but there's also a lot that was simply tedious to read. Perhaps the serious attentions of an editor could have saved it, but I suspect then it would have ended up a very thin book.

I've had this in my TBR pile so long that I must finally concede that I'm not going to read it. Its going in the 2009 Convention box of NZ books that is floating around here somewhere.
