Sarah Flannery has got to be the definition of a storm in a tea-cup. In 1999 she was all over the media, yet only 9 years later, who still remembers the girl who (kind of) invented a fantastic new method of cryptography for a school science fair? Luckily, she and her family seemed to have resisted believing in the hype surrounding her code, and in the preface her father admits that there would never have been so much interest if she wasn't young, female, and pretty, and that this book was written not because they believed it would be a great contribution to either the world of mathematics or of literature, but because a publisher asked her to.
I'm particularly relieved about that last point, because it's not actually that great a book - I'd hate to think its authors had any pretensions about it. It's disjointed in structure, the mathematics is explained adequately but not in a particularly inspiring manner (and this is me, total maths-geek saying this), and the autobiographical writing is of the standard you would expect from an average 16 year old - ok, but no more than that.

Caught at the Cafe Bleu tonight.

I tried to read this but was unable to finish. I've just been trying to explain bookcrossing to my uncle so will give this to him.

I enjoyed the book although as a non mathematician I could not understand all the explanations. I did admire Sarah's ability and pragmatism and I hope she does well in her life
