Year of Wonders
5 journalers for this copy...
Picked this up after seeing a doco on PBS about the "Plague Village", Eyam. Is going on top of the TBR list, in spite of the hundreds of others that have been waiting patiently for a little TLC.
Once I started this book, I couldn't put it down. It was a quick read and overall, I enjoyed the story. My only complaint is the ending didn't satisfy me. However, I did enjoy the fictionalised account of the villagers' experiences of the year in quarantine.
Is off to a friend in the UK for her reading pleasure.

This was sent to me by a good friend in the US as the setting is pretty local. Once I got over the name changes to the minister and his family (why bother with that?) I got quite involved ... until the rather silly ending ...
Will be passed onto UrbanHermit, but I have no idea if he'll read it ...

My husband and I were in the UK for about 10 days together and one of our stops was Eyam - the plague village where this book is set. We spent a good day in Eyam - hiking around the countryside, up to the Riley Graves (where Mrs Hancock buried her husband and six children), then out to other points of interest in the area as it was a simply gorgeous day. The sun was shining, the air was crisp, it wasn't bitterly cold yet.
After our hike up to the graves, we nipped into the Miner's Arms in the village centre for a pick-me-up pint and that's where I've left this book. Thanks to beebarf for passing it back to me and hopefully one day we'll get another journal entry.
After our drinks, we ducked into the church for a bit. A lovely day and I'm delighted that I had the chance to visit this village that's had a life of its own in my brain since I read this book. Mark really liked it as well - guess I'm gonna have to loan him my other copy, eh?

It was interesting. Some parts disturbing. The ending was unexpected.
It was particularly interesting as I am familiar with the location of the story and have walked the surrounding hills, so could relate, geographically to the story setting.

Enjoyed the book. Made more intersting as i am familair with Eyam and the surrounding area. There are not many books that bring a tear to my eye but this one did. I guess even though the book is fiction knowing it is based on actual events makes it more poignant.
