I got this out of the wheelbarrow where SGinger must have left it for a release at the Farmer's Market. I just read it today. Picked it up and just plowed through it in a couple hours.

It's a book that was translated from German. I'm not sure if something may have been lost in the translation. Actually, I would bet something of the original story was lost in the translation. I found some of the dialogue stilted, unsuited for American "ears," so to speak. If I had a background in German, I might have perhaps better understood some of what the specific usage means culturally. The story was interesting, a look at a woman who served in the SS during WWII as a guard. It focuses on her life after the war, an affair she had as a 36-year old woman with a boy of 15 and the turn their lives took after their relationship ended.

The story was interesting, some of the questions it raised intriguing. But I kept wishing it had had more metaphor to sustain it, more use of paradox.

Overall, it was a good read, a fairly easy read which I needed!

My husband and I took a walk this morning with 2 backpacks full of books. We stopped along our walk and released books. We headed for the Coffee Gaden on the Plaza that has a great patio in the back with a fountain and a whole bunch of bathing sparrows. We drank mochas and had omelettes for breakfast. It was fun! I'm between jobs at the mo, so this was a nice respite from real life.

We set this book free on top of the Index Tribune newspaper dispenser in front of the Index Tribune offices. Bob Lynch, who was the editor at the IT for years, just died. I felt like we should leave something there in memorum, and this seemed like an appropriate book because of the title.
