Found this book in a hostel in Florence and it really picked my curiosity. Inside there's this note: "A great book. From Karina. Brisbane, QLD, Australia"
I'm quite thankful to Karina and will be surely making her book travel further in the world.

21.Feb.2004 - I've really enjoyed this one! I'm pretty sure that it needed some research and I'm very fond of such books! There are quite many details and small stories... Really great! And my big thanks to Karina that left this book behind! :) I'll now share it with a few friends here in Lisbon and then it'll be travelling to Austria :)

With me for a while ... I've read "The kiss", by the same author, which is very disturbing, and also "Poison", an historical novel which I enjoyed, so I'm quite curious about this one.

It recreates vividly the atmosphere of Shanghai in the beginning of the century... Like all of Kathryn Harrison's heroines, May is not a very likeable character, but you end up admiring her strength and persistence. The switch between May and Alice's narratives was a bit confusing for me sometimes, and I wasn't quite expecting the story to be always so tragic, I kept hoping for a bit of happiness in the end, but I guess that just wouldn't be apropriate ...

Will be returning this to mady sometime soon.

The suffering caused by an ancient tradition was what stroke me most. It was interesting to read about how several persons deal with such traditions.

Received today - thanks sooo much!!

I read "Memoirs of a Geisha" some years ago and finished recently the autobiography by Mineko Iwasaki (Arthur Golden based his novel on her life) - therefore this one will be the perfect one to read now :-))

Finished reading - and I feel a little disturbed. Can´t really say if I liked the book or not. It´s an interesting read but...... don´t know. I´ll probably have to think about it.
