Full title: The Brendan Voyage: A Leather Boat Tracks the Discovery of America by the Irish Sailor Saints.
Suppose Christopher Columbus wasn't the first. Suppose Leif Erickson wasn't the first. Suppose the first to discover America was a modest sailor monk from Ireland - St Brendan. That is the thesis of this book.
Tim and his friends learn how to build a curragh out of seal skins and do so. And eventually they sail away. He brings in the chronicles wherein St Brendan speaks of the whales. And on their journey Tim's group finds themselves the plaything of whales. It is a rousing adventure, from beginning to end. Both in the current day and in the past.
