This is the cutest little book: guaranteed to put a smile on anyone's face. When I saw it, at the Moma (Museum of Modern Art) store and picked it up, I immediately started giggling. Two other women picked it up and we all marched to the counter to buy them.

I have decided to send this on a secret bookray. No one has signed up. But I have chosen a person that I think is very sweet and in need of a good giggle.

Hopefully she will do likewise, and secretly send this out to someone she wants to surprise. And on and on and on ....

Oh my goodness!!! What a terrific idea for a bookray! And thank you so much for the nice words and for choosing me first

Why, oh why, can't I think of things this funny and original? I have laughed until I had tears running down my face! I kept trying to pick my favorite--this one---no, this one--no. In the end, I had to decide that Mona was the best one--since that's actually my name. ;-)

The best part was how many were wearing little tiaras!

I loved this book, and I'm off now to find the next surpriseee!

Journal Entry 4 by TexasWren from Hillsboro, Texas USA on Tuesday, February 3, 2004
I loved this book! I have selected the next person on the secret bookray-Rainbowbabe. I picked her because she has brought so many relatives into the group this month. Not just into Bookcrossing, but into the forums--and they are all so nice! She deserves a reward!
The book has acquired a hitchhiker though. There was this chick hanging around my house, and when she heard the book was traveling, she demanded that I allow her to join it. She said something about being sick and tired of being stuck way out here on this stupid farm. sigh--kids! I tried to explain that the book was not traveling with first class accomodations, but she insisted, and I finally gave in to her. I don't think she will be much trouble, I insisted that she travel light.

Thank you for sharing this with me, Greedyreader.

How fun! Just received this book in the mail from TexasWren - it was a RABCK!!

TexasWren, you are such a sweetie! This book is so quirky and funny - I laughed all the way through it! (When I wasn't scratching my head and saying "huh??" ;-)

And thank you for the little chick and button! We have a button collection, and I've added the "Girls Rule!" to it. (My son says "hmph!!" lol)

When I send the book on, I'll send the little chick with it - but for now, she is looking down at me from the computer.

Thank you so much, TexasWren - you really made me smile!
:-) (see?)

- oops! I just read all the journal entries - I was so excited, I just wanted to register the book quickly! Now it's even MORE fun! A secret bookray! What an excellent idea! And now I get to choose who gets it next...oh, my, this WILL be fun!
:-) :-0 :-) :-) :-0 :-) :-0 :-)

Looking forward to spreading the smiles and surprise!

Ah, after enjoying this funny book, I've also had the pleasure of choosing who to send it to next! And I choose...Juliebarreto!
She has a great sense of humor, and she really loves life. I think she'll get a kick out of this wonderfully odd book!

And, TexasWren, a certain little bird whispered to me that she would love to travel to a beautiful island...I think she might even be up for some fun in the waves!

Enjoy, Julie!

And thank you SO much, Texaswren, for thinking of me, and Greedyreader for a truly inspired idea! :-)

I'll be mailing the package off tomorrow.

Journal Entry 7 by juliebarreto from Puako, Hawaii USA on Saturday, April 3, 2004
I am SO jazzed to receive this. Thanks for thinking of me, rainbowbabe! I feel like Sally Fields at the Academy Awards. ("You like me. You really like me!")

This book has hardly been out of anyone's hands since we opened it this afternoon. Both kids have laughed their way through it, and I brought it backstage to our community theater production of Neil Simon's "Last of the Red Hot Lovers. I play Jeanette, the most depressed woman in the world. It was pretty hard staying in character looking at these hilarious chick flicks.

April 13, 2004 - Both the book and chick had a wonderful visit here over Easter! I loaned the book to aunt, who had a real kick reading it. We kept trying to decide which was our favorite. Oh, and rainbowbabe, the magnetic Nancy Drew postcard is perfect! It's right next to my desk as I type. Back in the second grade, I discovered her and I made it my mission to read all the Nancy Drews then in print. I even resorted to reading by flashlight under the covers at night, and I'm sure that's why I wear glasses now!

Anyway, I was trying to think who to send this secret bookray off to next, because I have (make that HAD) the habit of deleting people's addresses once I mail them things. So, I didn't have a big list to choose from, while still keeping it secret. Then, through serendipity, cobaltcat sent me her address and I knew she was the perfect person to whom to send a secret book. We've got similar tastes as we often are in the same order in the same rings. So, cobaltcat, I hope you enjoy this little gem (while waiting for "An Italian in Britain")!

Aloha!

Journal Entry 8 by cobaltcat from Fresno, California USA on Tuesday, May 25, 2004
Oh, such a wonderful book! It was so fantastic to receive it and it came at just the right time. I'm recovering from what I thought was the flu and turned out to be pneumonia! My mother insisted I go to the doctor and I finally listened (at age 40!)I I guess Moms always know best. I've actually had it for a couple of weeks but my home PC crashed and I can't use the one at work for personal use. Disasters usually come in threes and sure enough the third one has to do with changes at work. (Whew!!! I think I'll be glad when May is done!).

I laughed and laughed at this book and I think I've read it every evening when I get into bed. I'm completely unable to determine which is my favorite, although I'm leaning towards Coco. Every page was absolutely hysterical! EAch time I look I see a little more detail. I also found it great fun to look at the jacket photos to see how the scenes were actually set up. The hard part has been to keep the cats away from the little chick that came with the book.

I do have a short list of people I have thought about sending this lovely book to.....I think I'll send it off next week.

Thanks so much juliebarreto for sending me the surprise, and for greedyreader for starting it in the first place.

Thanks everyone before me!

Sending to whokyles in the hope that she laughs as hard at this surprise ray as I did!

Journal Entry 13 by whokyles from Silver Spring, Maryland USA on Tuesday, September 28, 2004
An unexpected package that turned a crappy day into a lovely one. I love it. Hurricane Jeanne (or what was left of her) was drenching the city all day and I was feeling very depressed and surly UNTIL I got this book. The fuzzy yellow chicks were as bright as sunshine and just as cheering. I don't think words can do justice to this work of art. I keep reading the captions, looking at the pictures, laughing until I cry and then I have to start all over again.
For example:
Picture three of the fuzzy little chicks. Picture them in a room with a little fuzzy chick sized bunk bed a basketball, a Yankees cap, book bags and other things you'd expect to find in a boy's room scattered about. One chick is sitting on a larger chick's lap. The other stands by with its beak gaping. The caption underneath this sweet little scene reads: "At seven, many thought the twins were to old to be breast-feeding. But Mama loved her boys."
Yes, I had to re-read it a few times myself.
When I think of the work that went into creating the pictures, the careful placement of the chickens, the making the sets and props, I laugh even harder.

I read through this once, quickly, laughing my butt off. Then, I read through it a second time to really savor the humor. I'll read through it again, and share it with a few friends, before sending it off to make another BXer smile. Savagefuzzball and her overnight friend read through it and chuckled, too.
Thanks, whokyles, for brightening my day by sharing your twisted sense of humor with me.

I am so excited to recieve this book....I have sent out many secret bookrings into the Bookcrossing world but this is my first time being the recipient of one.

I will start going through the book tonight..a quick glance assurred me you were quite right in your instincts Spedbug..this is exactly the kind of book I would have bought myself ! thank you choosing me and for the state chicken magnet as well as the absolutely divine calligraphy...the postcard is definitely a keeper and the mailing envelope may get framed ! What talent ! What generosity.

I'll make some comments about the book when I've read it and am ready to pass it along...i think I already know where it is going next ...but I will have to find something chicken-ish to go with it !

Journal Entry 18 by Flambard from Horsham, West Sussex United Kingdom on Monday, June 13, 2005
Hah! My chance to name and shame Bill! Not only was the sweet, sweet guy kind enough to send this to me (and correctly gauging just how hysterical I'd find it - sorry, but the FrankenChickens of Dr Obispo nearly made my coffee come down my nose...) , but it arrived in a huge parcel of goodies!!! Maple syrup, maple fudge, maple butter (there may be a theme here...), maple lollies, pistachio sweetmeats - even smoked salmon! (Do I look hungry?) And a Dancing Diva for my car dashboard! I shall always think of Bill when I see her swinging her attitude! Bill has to be the nicest bookcrosser I know - and as you all must realise, that is against some humungously stiff competition!!!! So there!! Big hugs to Bill.

Anyway, back to the chickens... just who is Dr Obispo!? Heavens - I've just seen the one entitled "The prince's perverse fantasies were beginning to take their toll on Cinderella...". I'm sure that's barely legal, isn't it?

Thank you, Flambard, for making a very gloomy day suddenly bright.

Oh.
My.
God.

I have not laughed so hard in so long. This book came at just the most perfect time! I recieved it the day before I left for Japan, so i didn't really have enough time to give it the attention it deserved. However, the other night (as I and a number of my fellow corsters were enjoying come vodka, sake and smoked eel) i brought out the book. We laughed and laughed! It was just so silly!

Anyway, the timing is also goo as it shall now be able to make its way over to the UK were there is someone who I think will appreciate it nearly as much as i did - and going in the company of a few timtams and other Australian sweets.

Enjoy!!

Journal Entry 23 by minx2012 on Tuesday, December 13, 2005
Flipping heck!
There are Timtams everywhere!
I have my suspicions as to how a couple of young Aussies conspired to post this from Twickenham rather than Australia (and I quite like the irony of that, actually), but for the most part...

*speechless*

Thank you Em (and your secret helper)!

Ooo - a secret bookray, what a fantastic idea! How honoured I feel to be part of it. Have had a quick look, and a good giggle at the book, and will sit down later to have a proper look, now just got to decide who to send it on to - I can think of several people who need a giggle!

Lovely, lovely, lovely! What a riot!

Have sent this on to someone who needs a laugh even more than I do!

Journal Entry 32 by GlitterLover from Leyland, Lancashire United Kingdom on Wednesday, October 4, 2006
Received this glitter fuelled (serves me right for choosing GlitterLover) bundle of joy and explosive laughter, humiliating snorts and outright giggles today and read it immediately. Life couldn't be summed up better than by these leetle chickydees. Absolute genius creation. Oh and on the subject of genius creation thanks to all those people before me that meant this little surprise landed on my doorstep!

So, my favourite picture, oh so hard to choose... it has to be
Picture one chick lying face down on a massage table with another on her back massaging, meanwhile small chick on her back on the floor gazing up into her mother's face.
"Coco felt her mother's weekly massage was a fantastic opportunity to catch up on quality time."

I will have to read over again and then decide who will benefit from this wondrous creation next.

Very Very funny!!! arrived on the perfect day, feeling blue when a mystery package arrived I shook open the bag only to cover the kitchen worktop in glitter in true glitterlover stylee!!

Oh my favorite? the C-section bit on the second page oh it made me chuckle!!

Right off now to work out who to secret squirrel it to!!!

Journal Entry 35 by tutleymutley from Newton Abbot, Devon United Kingdom on Friday, December 15, 2006
Secret Book rays?!! Well, who'd have thunk?

It took me a while to work out just whooo had sent this. Thank you sooo much witchy pooooo!
I'd made the crass assumption that it had been glitterlover on a low glitter day - there being just a tinsiest smatter of sparkly and three stars tucked inside. But I wuz wrong! thanks for the titter, witchy!

My favourite pic? Besides the stack of little boxes inside the front and back covers? Gotta be Caitlin. That chick was just sooo confident - but "not only was she not the most beautiful girl in the room, she wasn't even PINK".
You just gotta laugh - or you'd cry.
I also seriously identified with the forty+ yr old fellas living it up some. go chicks go!

I sat down and read this just as quick as I could whip the cover off. Now I've got to go back and savour the detail. I've learned who Dr Obispo was (see illustration) -

mmm. who next?
I know just the person.

Journal Entry 36 by weebly from Hartwell, Northamptonshire United Kingdom on Tuesday, December 26, 2006
What great fun - both myself and BC-Wdiow have read the book - I was just trying to tell them where around the world this book has been but Chelsea scored and they just stopped listening!

My favourite is the Anastasia and the Frog, and BC-Widow liked the one where they are driving into KENTUCKY.

I will think about who to send it to. As TutleyMutley gave it to me wrapped beautifully on my birthday I do know a bookcrosser with a January birthday who might be the perfect recipient!

Update - It was pointed out to me that I passed this book on during Bird/Feather week on the Never Judge a Book by It's Cover Challenge - Week 2 - Bird/Feathers.

Journal Entry 37 by LyzzyBee from Birmingham, West Midlands United Kingdom on Friday, January 26, 2007
Passed to me by Heaven-Ali who had picked it up from weebly on Saturday - I am January Birthday Girl but was unable to collect it then due to illness. Opened it up in Hudsons Coffee House and had a giggle. Showed it to OH last night and had a giggle. Site was playing up so having an insomniac moment, I decided to catch it now. And WOW!I knew it was a secret cos it said so on the envelope but I had no idea it'd been travelling so long and to so many people - and how lovely to see so many familiar names on the list, some I've met in my previous incarnation in London (waves to Flambard) some dear friends now, and some I have only heard of but never met..

Anyway, OH wants to read this too so we'll keep it a week or so and then find another worthy recipient...

Thank you weebly!!!

Journal Entry 38 by LyzzyBee from Birmingham, West Midlands United Kingdom on Tuesday, April 10, 2007
A very enjoyable "read" and I'm sorry I've hung on to it so long. The dear next recipient will be showered with these secret RABCKs, then again she deserves them! And this is such an appropriate Easter gift (I can't see those little chicks - which are of course *everywhere* at the moment - without thinking of this book!)

I'm afraid my favourite was the one where the cat has "been" in the sandpit - what that says about me, who knows.

So inventive and clever, too!

The postie knocked with it at - well I'm not going to say what time because I was still in my pyjamas and I don't wish to incriminate myself.

Oh what a delight! I love surprises and I feel very privileged to be chosen to take part in this Secret Ray (brilliant idea!)

The book arrived on Friday, after I had left to go and spend a couple of days helping my Mum to celebrate her 90th birthday. It was only when I arrived there that I discovered I'd left my suitcase at home:-( So back we come and not only am I able to switch of the immersion heater I'd left on, but also found this little package on my doormat.

Of course, no time to appreciate it then, and I've only just got home and thought I ought to make a JE right away, but I haven't had a chance to do more than glance at it yet. I know I am going to love it! I plan to settle down with Fang, Flint (cats) and HonoraryBCDog and we'll all giggle together.

I will also love the Kendal Mint Cake! Thank you so much for that Swan - I adore the stuff and get few chances to indulge my passion these days.

Journal Entry 49 by jalna from Wrexham, Wales United Kingdom on Monday, September 3, 2007
Oh, I did love this book! So many books which are claimed to be funny leave me cold, but definitely not this one. I was hard put to pick out a favourite as I was going through, but then I got to "You binge, I'll purge." and I just roared out loud, so that's it!

It was an even hard job deciding who to send it on to next. Many of the people I thought I'd like to surprise had already been on this Ray! In the end I decided to pick a name from those listing it on their Wishlists at Cliff's, someone who was also registered (and addressed) at RABCK.com. Finally, I settled on ... wait and see! ... because I've sent many more books to the US than I have to Canada!

Enjoy your surprise!

From the front cover:

BITTER WITH BAGGAGE SEEKS SAME
THE LIFE AND TIMES OF SOME CHICKENS
Sloane Tanen

From the dust jacket flap:

With more personality than most people have to spare, New York artist SLOANE TANEN's tiny yellow chickens offer a crash course in navigating the tricky modern world.

Whether adhering to fad diets or braving three-headed blind dates, perusing the personal ads or winning playground popularity battles, enduring annoyingly crowded yoga classes or surviving beauty treatments gone terribly awry, these petite sophisticates are hunting (and pecking) for love and happiness in all the wrong places. Despite the frustrating obstacles of real life, they manage to hold fast to their dreams of rock stardom, Hollywood success, and supermodel celebrity, and find that occasionally, even a chicken's fairy-tale wish can come true.

Charming, witty, and somehow larger than life, these chickens will win your heart.

SLOANE TANEN's work has been exhibited in a number of shows and can be found in private and corporate collections in Manhattan, Boston, San Francisco, and Los Angeles. She received her B.A. from Sarah Lawrence College and holds graduate degrees in literary theory from NYU and in art history from Columbia University. She lives with her husband in New York City.

I've now reread this so many times and I still laugh out loud every time! It really is TOO cute. My boyfriend Jemanu also read it, and then I took it to work, where it brought productivity to a screeching halt as everyone gathered around and laughed their butts off. The owner of the company was ok with all that... as long as I let him take it home for a few days to share with his wife! Then I started feeling sorry for my boss, who now works at our new branch office across the country, as he wasn't around to see this, so I sent him this link which has excerpts from the book, and he declared it "Best. Link. EVER."

All in all, it brought much happiness to me and mine. Thanks so much to all who've come before for sharing! Also exciting: this is now the most-journaled book on my shelf! And I know just who to send it to next... one of the sweetest bookcrossers I've ever exchanged books with, AND she's wishing for it, AND I happen to have her address on hand! Hope she enjoys it as much as I have...

I've read through this little gem several times now. Growing up in KY and moving to Southern CA, I had to select the Fried Chicken one as my fave.

Thanks for sharing this adorable little book.

Sending off to bookcrossing friend in NC. I hope you enjoy this little book as much as I did.

Picked it up at the last Austin Bookcrossers meeting. I'm going to look over the addresses that I have and try and pick someone who hasn't had this book secretly rayed to them, which by the looks of it is going to be hard. So many bookcrossers that I know on the list before me. :)

So very cute, I couldn't pick just one favorite so I have two. I loved that some people indicated their favorites with post-it-notes, it was awesome to see which chickens appealed to which people.

Oh my gosh how fabulous - thank you Sarradee this is just great :) I am going to have a look at this book and choose my fave Chick, then send it onwards and I think I know who too as well ;)

Ooh - how exciting! I recognised Giz's writing on the envelope and didn't think I was expecting anything from her - and I certainly wasn't expecting this! Lovely to recognise so many other Bc names on the journals as well. Will have a good look through this later. Thank you!!

I just loved this book! It kept me giggling all the way through, then my daughter asked what ws I laughing at so she had a look through as well. And not to be left out, my husband looked through it and couldn't stop laughing!

This will now be travelling on to another BCer who I think might appreciate it :)

I recognised your writing too, and thought 'Uh??'
Thanks Camis!
Whilst I type this JE Sunlightbobo is gigging over the pics..don't think she understand the irony quite yet. Not sure where this will go next..probably to the Chester meet up!

Oh what a brilliant book, thank you for sending me this secret ray Sunny. I have had a quick look through it and picked a favourite, but I think I will look through it a couple of more times before I definitely choose one. It has certainly made me laugh. I will probably share this with my sister-in-law before I post it off to another unsuspecting bookcrosser. It is just amazing how much it has travelled since it started it's journey.
