Read and release!
Picked these up today, looking forward to releasing them and letting more people discover Atwood.
Taking along to the Chelmsford BC meet to pass on to a fellow bookcrosser.
Thanks katrinat for remembering that I was interested in reading this World Book Night copy of The Blind Assassin. Although I have read this novel before, (last summer in fact, so one year ago), I rushed through it the first time around so that I could release it in the UK before I returned to The Netherlands. Now I get a chance to read it at my leisure and to be a little part of the history in this special World Book Night copy! It was great meeting you and the other Chelmsford Bookcrossers at your monthly meeting. I hope we can do this again the next time I am in the UK.
Great book! Loved the story, and I really felt sorry for Laura. I cannot do better than the Amazon review below!!
Amazon Editorial Review
The Blind Assassin opens with these simple, resonant words: "Ten days after the war ended, my sister Laura drove a car off a bridge." They are spoken by Iris, whose terse account of her sister's death in 1945 is followed by an inquest report proclaiming the death accidental. But just as the reader expects to settle into Laura?s story, Atwood introduces a novel-within-a-novel. Entitled The Blind Assassin, it is a science fiction story told by two unnamed lovers who meet in dingy backstreet rooms. When we return to Iris, it is through a 1947 newspaper article announcing the discovery of a sailboat carrying the dead body of her husband, a distinguished industrialist. Brilliantly weaving together such seemingly disparate elements, Atwood creates a world of astonishing vision and unforgettable impact.
I will now try to lend this book out.

Sounds an intriguing read. Thanks for passing it on to me Nicole. It's already aroused my curiosity. To be continued ... Janice.
I received this book back from Janice last Sunday. She said she would try to leave a review here. However, I received an email saying that although she did try, she couldn't remember how to leave a review. (I guess it can be complicated if you are signing in a second time as an anonymous finder on the same book! It's far easier if you are a member of BC.) This book will now go back into my WBN book box to be lent out to members of our Anglican church congregation.
Anyway here is Janice's review:
This novel is simply enthralling. Once it has you in its grip, it just doesn’t let go. It is a story of relationships – and particularly that of two sisters growing up in Canada − relationships that evolve and are revealed as years go by, as events occur, and as knowledge and experience are gained. At over 600 pages, it is a big read in all respects but it never failed to hold this reader’s attention.
As the story unfolds at different levels, it is worthwhile devoting some consistent attention to the opening chapters to get your bearings. Does that sound daunting? Not a bit of it. It’s just that five minutes a night before falling asleep is not enough. And once you are safely on your way, it will be difficult to take time out for sleep anyway!

Hello Nicole. I already started this book. I like it so far.
Good book. Laura was a bit weak I think. Sad story. Giving back to Nicole
Book is back in my WBN box, thank you. I'm hoping it might go home with someone else today as I'm having expat meeting and these expats seemed to be starved of English books. So they are fighting over them.....well almost!!
Yesterday I had an expat meet-up and I showed my World Book Night box of books to all these friends from English speaking lands, who live here in The Netherlands. The result was amazing. Every single book got taken home by someone, (to be returned at a later date, so that I can lend them out again). I know English books are hard to come by here, but these friends are all apparently STARVED of English books!!!!
Most people made a "catch" journal entry here before they left, using my computer, with me standing over them to make sure we got those journal entries!!! There was a computer here .....so why not!!! So many release notes to be made and so many JE's afterwards that I got too tired. So left some Almelo people until today, as the Almelo expats are coming together again today for coffee!!
This book went home with Pat from Almelo.
Enjoy!

Hello, I'm Pat and I have The Blind Assassin. I took it home last night, but since I am back with Nicole today, she's showing me how easy it is to leave a message!! OK!
I will read it and return it next time I see Nicole.

Great day with expats and I returned this book to Nicole. Great book. Just loved it. I think I saw my mum reading this some years ago.
Now that I have read one book and enjoyed it, I just might take another one home today or tomorrow evening.
Thanks for lending. Pat xx

Thanks for reading this book Pat. I'm glad you enjoyed it. You see, reading is not that bad after all! The book is back in my book box and I hope one of the other expats will take it home tonight or tomorrow night.
Sorry I'm so late with these release notes, but I was a bit overwhelmed with having so many books come back to me, and go out at the same time in April. Anyway, on April 21st this book went home with Rosie from Schelfhorst, Almelo. I don't think Rosie will make a JE unless I am with her to help her. So it probably won't be until after the book is read.
Good book, although I was confused in places. I re-read the beginning and a couple of other parts and then I understood it better. It is not like me to read such big books, and to actually re-read parts is definitely not like me, but I took Nicole's advice to read it really slowly, at my leisure. Then with no time pressure I began to enjoy it. How wonderful to be able to borrow books when the person lending them to you says that you can take as much time as you like to read it, even if it takes a year! I used to borrow books from the library, but because I hardly ever read, I could never finish the books before the date deadline. It is such a bother to remember to renew the date or to take the books back, and I decided no more library books for me!
Anyway, I really liked this story. I give it a 7 star rating. Poor Laura!

I received this book today, and it is now back in my 2011 World Book Night Book Box. However, I will be retiring this 2011 box for a while as I want to promote the books in my 2012 WBN book box. I do not have all the titles yet, but I do have quite a few of them. The others are proving very difficult to get hold of. So, until all my 2012 books are out with new readers, this book will be having a rest!
I will be releasing this book soon.
