The first in the Mary Russell/Sherlock Holmes series.
"The game's afoot...but this time, the hunters are the prey. In 1915, long since retired from his observations of criminal humanity, Sherlock Holmes is engaged in a reclusive study of honeybee behavior on the Sussex Downs. Never did he think to meet an intellect to match his own--until his acquaintance with Miss Mary Russell, a very modern fifteen-year-old whose mental acuity is equaled only by her audacity, tenacity, and penchant for trousers and cloth caps, unthinkable in any young lady of Holmes's own generation.
Under Holmes' sardonic tutelage, Russell hones her talent for deduction, disguises, and danger: in the chilling case of a landowner's mysterious fever, and in the kidnapping of an American senator's daughter in the wilds of Wales. But her ultimate challenge is yet to come. A near-fatal bomb on her doorstep--and another on Holmes's--sends the two sleuths on the trail ofa murdere whose machinations scatter meaningless clues and seem utterly without motive. The villain's objective, however, is quite unequivocal: to end Russle and Holmes's partnership--and then their lives."

Outside everything looks gray and damp, but on my doormat I found this book. Wonderful, thanks a lot TigerLily4!
This book keeps moving downwards on my TBR-pile: other books constantly elbow their way to the top. Now that I found someone who had it on her wishlist, I decided to finally read it, but I seem to have lost my appetite for mysteries. I'm glad I found a good home for it, though, and will send it there tomorrow.
Yesterday I returned from a short trip to England - to find this book on my doorstep! This is a book I've loved for quite some time, and now MaaikeB is so friendly to send me the original version. Thanks so much!
It had been a long, long time since the last time I crossed the Canal. In fact, it was the first time ever I got to see the countryside! So pretty, so green... England is really lovely!
The funny thing is, when I walked through Oxford last Saturday, scenes from The Beekeeper's Apprentice kept popping up in my mind, because large parts of the story are situated there. It will be interesting to find out if my perception of the book will change as a result (I feel a re-reading coming up ;-)
This book won't travel any further, but two weeks ago, I released my copy of the Dutch translation in a Deventer lunchroom called A taste of honey. Notes (in Dutch) can be found here. Btw - when i checked a few days ago it was still there!

Finished reading The Beekeeper's Apprentice a few days ago. I - again - really enjoyed it, this is one of the books i can read over&over again.
Since i had read this book in Dutch more then once, it was an rather amusing experience to re-read it in English. Every now and then i found myself thinking "oh, this was the writer intending". I was reading English & remembering Dutch at the same time. There were also a few new jokes that hadn't made it into the Dutch version. I had never thought so much about translating, but it must be an interesting profession!
Thank you, MaaikeB en Tigerlily!
(btw - my Dutch copy is no longer where I left it, but it hasn't been journaled.... yet)
