I'm a fan of Nick Hornby, but this novel never came together for me. I didn't connect much with the heroine, and couldn't immerse myself in the fanastical plot. I haven't given up on Hornby, but I recommend his other books (especially High Fidelity) instead of this one.
I got this from kristamd (thanks!) at our recent mini-meetup in Maryland. I've heard it's not his best, but I'll give it a shot--I loved the movies High Fidelity and About a Boy, and I've been meaning to read one of his novels for some time. TBR.
This was a thought-provoking but deeply flawed story, one that raised interesting questions but made little attempt to answer them in any serious way. The overall effect was incoherent, and the final scene, if I interpreted it correctly, was downright depressing.
The characters were mostly unlikeable, and David's spiritual conversion never really rang true or made sense in terms of his personality. The narrator, Katie, was often downright disagreeable, but at the same time, her reactions to the wacky schemes of David and DJ GoodNews were often muted and tame, compared to how someone in her situation might respond in real life.
I don't know, the whole book just seemed off somehow. That being said, it did have some funny moments and wasn't a complete waste of time. This book apparently isn't representative of Hornby's best efforts, so I'll suspend judgement until I've had a chance to read one of his other novels.

Have just discovered this at the back of my bookshelf and realised (very shamefully) that I have had this for 18 months without reading it!
In the spirit of Bookcrossing, this book really needs to move on to someone who will appreciate it. Will be posted as a RABCK shortly.

Received in the mail today -- what a lovely surprise! Thanks awaywithfairies!
This had lots of funny moments, but overall I found the book too frivolous for its subject matter. I haven't read any of Hornby's other books but after looking at the other comments, maybe I'll give him another try.
Caught at Meetup last night. I read High Fidelity and wasn't a big fan, but I'm willing to give this a shot.
